I was doing some research on Chris’ Hot Dogs today and found this wonderful cartoon by Frank M. Spangler, Jr. dated May 21, 1944. His father who was known as simply “Spang” was a well-known cartoonist for the Montgomery Advertiser from 1905 until his death in 1946.

In this cartoon, Spang Jr. who was somewhere in England at the time, shows George at Chris’ behind the counter serving up hamburgers and hot dogs. Spang Jr. shows himself on the bottom left and on the right asks, “How about sending some hamburgers and hot dogs over?” He even put his address at the top. I am not sure who George is so if someone knows please tell me. The caption says “Little George” received it by V-Mail the previous week.

I did colorize the image from the original black and white.

Aerial view postcards are not only striking visually, but also capture an area's landscape within the time period they were created. This postcard image depicts Maxwell Air Field in Montgomery. Credited to the Alabama Department of Archives and history collections.

Who has fond memories of the old theaters across the state? The image here is from December 1958 and features the old Paramount Theatre at 249 Montgomery Street in downtown Montgomery, Alabama. Now known as the Davis Theater and owned by Troy University, the Paramount was built in 1929. A party advertised on the marquee was sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Smith-Wynn Post 96. THE BLOB and I MARRIED A MONSTER FROM OUTER SPACE are playing at the theater. The Whitley Hotel and Whitley Coffee Room are visible in the background.
