Smoky’s Neighborhood Grill Officially retired 8/31/23!! Thank you for the memories Modesto!❤️ The one-time popular burger joint, which first opened in Modesto in 1968, is back.

Fourteen years after it flipped its last burger, Smoky’s has returned, thanks to former owner Mike Nelson and his business partner Darryl Johnson. Nelson has owned a string of eateries over the past 30 years, most recently Mike’s Grillhouse and Mike’s Roadhouse. Johnson is the owner of United Sign Systems for over 20 years. So, with their 25-year friendship, these two combined forces to bring a cl

assic back to Modesto. Smoky’s Neighborhood Grill has many of the same menu items as the original Smoky’s – burgers, sandwiches, soups, salads, tri-tip, and roast turkey. And, of course, Rudy’s Chili Cheese Dog, a Smoky’s staple named after Nelson’s father. The restaurant, which seats over a 100 people, is tailored to clientele in Modesto and surrounding areas. Smoky’s serves breakfast and lunch with quick, quality items at reasonable prices. In addition to our lunch fare, the menu includes from-scratch breakfast items and baked goods, as well as specialty Clayton's coffee drinks and hand-scooped shakes.

Dear friends and loyal customers,

For the last 40 years it has been my pleasure to serve this community. You welcomed me with open arms since I was just a little boy standing on a milk crate (because I couldn’t see over the counter) at the Velvet Creamy. You’ve celebrated the biggest milestones of your lives with me and even trusted me with the most difficult times. Now it’s time for me to hang up my apron for the last time on August 31st and enjoy everything I’ve worked so hard for all these years. I’ll never be able to thank the community enough for your continued support all these years, if it wasn’t for all of you I wouldn’t have had the success I have had. It’s not goodbye though, it’s see you soon! I’ll still be involved in the community through philanthropic endeavors (in between baseball practices, school plays, and dance recitals😆). Please join us over the next couple weeks to say goodbye, eat some good food, and share some laughs. I look forward to seeing you.
