Houston White started The Get Down Coffee
Co. in Camdentown, North Minneapolis in 2020.

It was a tangible way to make specialty coffee (one of his many passions) more welcoming and diverse, and bring people from different
walks of life to the table.

Long before Houston was roasting coffee or building spaces for community, he was writing rhymes. Like so many kids growing up in the '80s and '90s, hip-hop wasn't just music—it was possibility.

Born in the Bronx, hip-hop transformed turntables into instruments, sidewalks into stages, and everyday stories into art. It proved that creativity doesn't wait for permission. It starts with what you have and grows into something the world can't ignore.

That spirit never left.

You can see it in the way we design our spaces. The way we tell stories. The way we build community. The way we believe culture can create opportunity.

The first place Houston learned how to build community wasn't a coffee shop. It was behind a barber chair.

Barbering taught us that people rarely come in just for the service.

Before there was The Get Down Coffee, there was a barber chair at HWMR (Houston White Men's Room).

That's where Houston learned that people rarely come in just for the service.

The barbershop taught us that hospitality isn't about what you sell—it's about how you make people feel.

Those lessons didn't stay behind the chair. They became the foundation for everything we're building today, from our coffee to our café to our commitment to Camdentown.

The easy answer is a coffee shop/bistro/community space.

The real answer is something a little different.

We're creating a place where neighbors become regulars. Where ideas are shared across tables. Where young people see what's possible. Where culture isn't just talked about—it's lived.

Every material, every color, every piece of art is being chosen with intention because spaces have a way of shaping the conversations that happen inside them.

This is an early look behind the scenes. Not just at the space in the making, but at a vision we've been building for a long time.
