Eliza Wheaton graces the stage with an elegant tribute to the timeless Astrud and João Gilberto, the mother and father of bossa nova. Singing classics such as “The Girl from Ipanema,” “Água de Beber,” and “Corcovado,” Eliza transports audiences to a small room in Rio de Janeiro with its window open as the rhythms of Brazil and the ocean drift softly inside.

Bastard Sycamore began as a free jazz trio when its members met in high school, and they were active up until they dispersed to different cities on opposite sides of the country. Now, they are reuniting to play their first gig in seven years. Preceded by an improv set by Noah Ophoven-Baldwin and William Statler.

Born in The Gambia, raised in North Minneapolis, and a relative newcomer to making music after starting as a visual artist, he’s taken strides in his sound in a short time. With his new self-produced EP, JAKAARLO, he brings his voice into focus, exercising restraint in arrangements while pushing his craft forward. Songs burst with color, texture, and hooks.

His work has earned the rare distinction of being signed to both Stones Throw Records and Blue Note Records, two of the most influential labels in hip-hop and jazz, signaling his legitimacy and impact in both scenes. A Grammy Award–winning producer for his contributions to Malibu by Anderson .Paak, he has collaborated with artists including Dr. Dre, Kaytranada, De La Soul, Pete Rock, Terrace Martin, Kenny Beats, Walter Smith III, and Nate Smith.

Kicking off the night at Icehouse on June 20, with an opening poem is our homegrown, but world recognized, poet, and LGBTQIA+ advocate, Andrea Jenkins!

Andrea Jenkins is a soulful poet, oral historian and political powerhouse. In 2017, she became the first out Black Trans woman elected to public office in the United States. She formerly served on the Minneapolis City Council.

She holds a Master’s degree in Community Economic Development from Southern New Hampshire University, a Master of Fine Arts from Hamline University, and a Bachelor’s degree from Metropolitan State University. Additionally, she completed the Senior Government and Executive Leadership program at Harvard University.

Her work and leadership have been featured in TIME Magazine, Essence, Teen Vogue, The New York Times, The Guardian, and Minneapolis St. Paul Magazine. In 2022, she was recognized on the OUT100 list by OUT Magazine, the Twin Cities Business 100 People to Know, and Fast Company’s Top 50 Qu**rs.
