Kicking off this year's Minneapolis Aquatennial with this photo from our collections depicting parade floats passing down a Minneapolis Street for Aquatennial's Grande Day Parade in 1960.

The Aquatennial was born in 1939, out of a desire to promote Minneapolis as a vacation destination, highlighting Minneapolis's status as the "City of Lakes." The name "Aquatennial" was chosen by contest to highlight all our city's abundance of lakes, rivers, and parks. From sail and motor boat races to choreographed aquatic shows to the parade itself, the festivities would draw a crowd of more than 200,000.

This year's Minneapolis Aquatennial will take place from July 19 - 22.
