I miss when “What do you want to be?” was a Halloween question.

Now somebody asks and I’m like, “Ahead. Just once. Right now the only thing in this house ahead of schedule is the microwave, and that’s because we set it wrong in March.”

The rest of us are waiting on a password reset and trying to remember whether the laundry in the washer is on its second wash or its third. At this point, I’m not doing laundry. I’m renewing its lease.

For lunch, though, I have an answer.

Nashville Hot Pulled Chicken Grilled Cheese. This weekend at The Mill Yard.

Smoked pulled chicken tossed in Nashville hot butter, Country View mild cheddar and Monterey Jack, house-made pickles, and a little house hot honey on buttery, toasted DV8 Kitchen sourdough. Cowboy ranch on the side for dipping.

Come let us feed you. You don’t have to finish everything before you’re allowed to enjoy something.

There’s grace for the unfinished stuff. And at this point, those towels have been baptized more than most of us.

Day two of sharing thoughts about the education system that absolutely nobody asked a sandwich shop to have.

Yesterday, we proposed letting teachers send one completely honest email per semester.

Today, I think schools should let teachers write progress reports on parents.

Nothing too serious. Just a little constructive feedback.

“Pleasure to have in the classroom. Unfortunately, we’ve never seen them in the classroom.”

“Frequently forgets important dates despite receiving 14 emails, three text messages, and a paper sent home in a folder. Claims nobody told them. We’re considering having the next reminder delivered by a marching band. At least then the neighbors will know.”

“Very involved in their child’s education. Particularly when there’s a grade they don’t agree with. Has not shown the same enthusiasm toward homework.”

And my personal favorite:

“Parent insists child would never behave that way at home. We would love to visit this home. Apparently, an entirely different child lives there.”

I think this could really improve communication between parents and teachers. Probably need to get a few attorneys involved first. 😂

And while we’re handing out grades, we think our house-made pimento cheese gets an A+. Country View Creamery’s mild white cheddar is the reason. We’re just the proud parents taking all the credit.

We sell it by the tub, too. Whatever happens between you and a spoon after that is none of our business.

Anyway, THURSDAY SCHOOL DELIVERY IS TOMORROW! 🥪

We’re bringing sandwiches, canned iced coffees, and handcrafted lemonades to:

📍 Cane Ridge — 11:00 a.m.

📍 St. Mary School — 11:30 a.m.

📍 Bourbon Central & Bourbon Preschool — 12:15 p.m.

⏰ Order by 9:30 a.m.!

And to all our teachers, thank you for everything you do. We genuinely appreciate you.

Especially the ones who’ve mastered the art of writing “a joy to have in class” without technically lying.

We grew up believing quicksand would be a much bigger issue and bread would be a much smaller one.

Turns out adulthood depends a lot more on knowing a good baker than knowing how to reach a branch without making sudden movements.

Nobody prepared us for this. They let us spend six weeks learning the recorder. Not once has a situation called for it. Several have specifically called for it to stop.

This is Hopewell Bake Exchange ciabatta… the foundation of so many of your favorite sandwiches. Stellar every time. I can’t even get my phone to recognize me every morning. Same face. Been here the whole time. HBX has apparently figured out consistency at a level Apple hasn’t.

We think the world of them. Our customers feel the same about their bread. An agreement this unanimous usually means nobody read the terms.

A great sandwich starts with amazing bread. We lived through dial-up. We’ve waited long enough for things to be good on both ends.

HBX cares about their craft. We get to build on it. And when you tell us you loved your sandwich, they deserve to hear it, too.

We get to hand you the sandwich, but we know whose work is holding the whole thing together.

Feed your people. Brag on the ones who help you do it.

HBX, thanks for giving so many of our best ideas a top and a bottom.

I think teachers should be allowed to send one completely honest email per semester.

And college professors, too. I’m married to one. I’ve seen enough to know this policy needs to extend into higher education.

Just one.

No proofreading. No “I hope this message finds you well.” No “just circling back.” No asking three coworkers, “Does this sound ugly, or just accurate?”

Just whatever you typed the first time.

Then a little box pops up that says, “Are you sure?”

And underneath it, a second button that says, “I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life.”

I’m not saying it would solve every problem in education.

I am saying morale would improve by about 9:17 a.m. 😂

Anyway, Bourbon County Middle, High, Central Office and River Christian Academy, we’re delivering lunch tomorrow! 🥪

We’ve got sandwiches, canned iced coffees, and handcrafted lemonades. And speaking of things with a little kick…

If you’re a teacher who’s been adding a little extra spice to your emails lately, we understand.

We’ve been putting ours in a bottle. Apparently, that’s more socially acceptable than hitting “Reply All” and letting the Holy Spirit sort it out.

Anyway, the hot honey is homemade. The self-control is still under review.

“Why don’t you deliver to every school every week?”

Great question. We get that one a lot.

We’d love to. We’d also love a second driver, a bigger kitchen, and to finish everything on our to-do list. We actually did once. For about six minutes in 2023. Beautiful afternoon. Still talk about it.

Right now, it’s two sandwich artists and one driver covering Bourbon and Nicholas counties. We’d hire another, but apparently “free sandwiches, good vibes, and ‘regional transportation specialist’ on your résumé” isn’t a competitive benefits package. People want actual money. I checked with several. Unanimous decision.

So we rotate schools because being in six places at once apparently isn’t something you can learn on YouTube. I checked. Found a 47-minute tutorial. Guy wanted my Social Security number, my mother’s maiden name, and $19.95. I was willing to negotiate until he said the course was only available in Spanish. I barely passed English.

Anyway, here’s our October and November school delivery schedule! 🥪

And YES, you can order our canned iced coffees and handcrafted lemonades with lunch. Because sometimes the only thing standing between you and an email to the entire faculty containing your actual thoughts is a little caffeine.

⏰ Orders in by 9:30 a.m. on your scheduled delivery day!

All jokes aside, we wish we could visit every school every week. We love feeding our teachers and school staff, and we’re grateful you keep inviting our little operation into your day.

We’re doing our best with what we’ve got and trusting God with the rest.

And if He decides to multiply our drivers like the loaves and fishes, a little advance notice would be appreciated. We’ll need more shirts.

The Better Half, holding The Better Half. Both have exceeded expectations. One married me, so let’s give her a minute to review her results.

Savannah is gluten-free, so we made hers on GF bread. Seemed reasonable to let the woman eat her own invention. We’re a small business, but we do have a fairness department.

That smile is because you’ve shown her sandwich so much love. She spends a lot of time making sure everybody else is taken care of. Thanks for giving her a turn.

Here till 2 today. If you’re still deciding what to eat, this sandwich has already been through a married couple’s approval process. You won’t find a more thoroughly discussed lunch.

Feed your people. Make room at the table. Make sure your person gets a sandwich.

Love is patient. Love is kind. Love gets us each our own sandwich. We’re equally yoked. Just unequally hoagied.

Wake up, sunshine. There’s a whole Saturday out there, and we’ve got warm Fig and Honey cinnamon rolls.

Get up. Get dressed. Get over here before your spouse says, “I’ve been thinking about the kitchen.”

For just $5, you can make their day before they make a Pinterest board. I’ve never seen a cinnamon roll turn into a home equity loan.

This day is a gift. Enjoy a little of it.

Have some coffee. Give somebody a little grace. Get a little icing on your beard. There are worse ways to be a light in this world.

Meet The Better Half. Savannah Faye Robin’s sandwich, named in her honor. She gives 100%. Probably 1,000%. I’m still a work in progress. The Lord’s got His hand on me, but every so often I hear Him ask for a different tool.

She wanted cold turkey, smoked cheddar, Grippo’s, and garlic aioli on a toasted hoagie.

I added bacon, shredded lettuce, and pickled jalapeños. She makes me a better man. I make her sandwich harder to close. We each have a ministry.

She put the chips inside the sandwich. Saved you a whole trip to the bag. That’s the kind of leadership this country needs.

This weekend at The Mill Yard. Tell Savannah she was right. Then mention how much you liked the bacon, lettuce, and jalapeños. Loud enough that she hears it. Casual enough that she doesn’t know we talked.

Feed your people. Be grateful for the ones who make you better. Savannah does that for me every day. I added bacon. Different-sized gifts, but we’re both trying.

Share this with all your people. Friends, neighbors, that fella you’ve waved at for six years and can no longer reasonably ask his name.

Grayson Jenkins. October 23. Free admission. Let’s pack the square. Whatever that guy’s name is, we want him there.
