🦢 Sandhill Cranes of the Lassen Area
One of the most impressive wildlife sightings in the Lassen region is the majestic Sandhill Crane. Standing nearly four feet tall with a wingspan reaching over six feet, these graceful birds are known for their distinctive red crowns, elegant movements, and unmistakable rolling calls that can be heard from miles away.
Each spring and summer, Sandhill Cranes return to the meadows, wetlands, and agricultural valleys surrounding the Lassen area to nest and raise their young. They are often seen foraging in open fields and wet meadows, feeding on grains, insects, small animals, and native plants.
Sandhill Cranes are famous for their elaborate courtship dances, where pairs leap, bow, spread their wings, and toss vegetation into the air. These displays help strengthen the lifelong bonds they form with their mates.
Visitors exploring the meadows and open spaces around Highlands Ranch Resort may be fortunate enough to spot these remarkable birds. Early morning and evening are often the best times for viewing, when cranes are most active and their unique calls echo across the landscape.
As one of North America's oldest bird species, with ancestors dating back millions of years, the Sandhill Crane is a living symbol of the wild beauty and natural heritage that make the Lassen region such a special place to visit.
