🥃 The Ice Theory: One of the Origins of “On the Rocks”

One of the most accepted explanations behind the expression “on the rocks” dates back to the 19th century in the United States.

As natural ice became more widely available, whiskey drinkers began adding large chunks of ice to cool their bourbon without watering it down too quickly. Over time, ordering whiskey “on the rocks” became a common expression that spread throughout bars across America.

Today, it’s one of the most recognized ways to enjoy whiskey around the world.
