Moon over Meriden. Tonight’s the night! Celebrate Small Town America with live music and perfect end-of-summer weather in Meriden. The Fire Department will be serving burgers from 5:00 to 8:00 (or until gone), followed by a street dance featuring Dane Louis from 8:00 to 11:00. All proceeds support the City and Fire Department. Details below. Hazard Tavern will be open for business as usual starting at 4:00.

Today is National Bacon Lovers Day, a holiday dedicated to enjoying the smoky, savory, and crispy goodness of bacon. Celebrate at the Hazard Tavern, where you’ll find bacon on several of our customer-favorite pizzas, like the Farmer, Bacon Cheeseburger, Saucey Pig, Chicken Rancher, and Dill Pickle Rollup. The Meriden Picnic started as a Fire Department burger cookout to raise money in 1951 and grew into a beloved community gathering featuring food stands, games, cash drawings, and carnival. Below left are photos from 1968.

This Saturday (August 22) the City of Meriden Iowa and Meriden Fire & Rescue are channeling that history by sponsoring a new Hazard Picnic. Just like in the beginning, the Fire Department will serve up grilled burgers from 5:00 to 8:00, which will be followed by a street dance featuring Dane Louis from 8:00 to 11:00, with proceeds to support the City and Fire Department. See below right for details.

The Hazard Tavern will be open for business as usual on Saturday to help support the event (although we encourage everyone to patronize the Fire Department burger feed). Tell your friends and see us in Meriden on Saturday night! 🍔 🎸🍻

Congratulations, good luck, and thank you to these outstanding young adults as they start or return to college! They’ve been part of the Hazard Tavern family for years—some of them going all the way back to year one.

We appreciate their hard work, dedication, and commitment to taking care of our customers. We’ll miss having them around, not only because they’re great employees, but because they’re a lot of fun!

We’ve enjoyed watching them grow over the years, both personally and professionally, and we’re proud to have been a small part of their journey. We wish them success and look forward to seeing all the great things they accomplish.
