🍌💜 WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE WEDNESDAY!
Instant vs. Cooked Banana Pudding
Banana pudding is a southern delicacy and happened to be one of my mother‘s favorite desserts. Her birthday is 4 days away so I want to honor her in this week’s WTDW by spotlighting the DESSERT that was not only her favorite but one that is a staple at Sunday dinners, family reunions, church gatherings, and holiday celebrations!
But did you know there are two popular ways to make this Southern favorite?
🍌 INSTANT BANANA PUDDING: Made with instant pudding mix and cold milk, this version sets without cooking. It’s quick, convenient, and often has a lighter, creamier texture, especially when whipped topping is added.
🍌 COOKED BANANA PUDDING: Made with homemade stovetop custard, traditionally using milk, sugar, egg yolks, vanilla, and a thickener like flour or cornstarch. The result is a rich, silky custard with that unmistakable homemade flavor.
✨ BAKER TIP: When making cooked banana pudding, stir your custard consistently over medium or medium-low heat to prevent scorching and lumps. I remember my Mother stirring her custard for what seemed like hours so get ready if you’re new to making banana pudding from scratch. Always allow your custard to thicken properly before layering it with your bananas and vanilla wafers.
Growing up, my mom made her banana pudding from scratch and she always arranged it in a rectangular glass dish and finished it with a generous layer of crushed vanilla wafers. So thats how I’ll always do it. 💜
Instant Vs. Cooked Banana Pudding. Both versions have their place, but there’s something special about the recipes we grew up loving!
Now tell me, which one do you prefer?
