"Let Books Be. Protect the Freedom to Read."

That is the theme of Banned Books Week 2026 which is taking place now, October 4th–10th.

History matters!

Launched in 1982 Banned Book Week was sparked by a surge in book challenges and the Supreme Court case Island Trees School District v. Pico, in which it was decided that local school boards cannot remove books from public school libraries simply because they dislike the ideas in those books or wish to enforce a political or social orthodoxy.

While the first few decades after 1982, challenges were relatively scare and mostly hyper-local, usually driven by a single parent or community member objecting to a specific book their child brought home.

The fight continues!

More recently, instead of single-book objections, modern challenges are being initiated by organized advocacy groups and political constituencies. These groups submit long, pre-compiled lists demanding the simultaneous removal of dozens or hundreds of books from entire school districts or library.

Nearly 12,000 instances of book bans during the 2025–2026 school year were recorded, affecting thousands of unique titles and authors. Most challenged books center on LGBTQIA+ themes, race and social justice, or minority viewpoints.

Protect free speech, protect learning, protect banned books!

Southland Books is a proud champion of free speech, access to information and thought, and the freedom to read. Stop by the store and find a banned book to read today!

Did you know women weren’t allowed to compete in Highland Games until the 1980s and then for nearly a decade they threw the same weight as the men?

Nowadays, despite being historically and currently male-dominated, modern festivals increasingly offer full slates for Women Open (ages 18–39), Women Masters (ages 40+), and lightweight divisions.

Some modern Scottish events have even achieved an equal 50/50 split between male and female strength competitors!

If you've ever had your interest in the Highland Games piqued, but have no idea what to do, The Bird & The Bird is hosting an Information Session just for you.

No experience in Highland Games, track and field, or sports of any kind is required! Some people come into it with years of track and field experience - some people have never played a sport in their lives. And many new competitors start later, in their 30s and 40s.

Stop by this Wednesday, October 7th and get to know real competitors that are not so different from you. Ask questions, try out some weights, meet other curious folks and and learn about the events that make up Highland Games.

There aren't many reasons not to learn about Highland Games, as a woman (or anyone for that matter).

We hope you come by and learn more! All are welcome!

Banning Books is serious business.

Help us in the fight this Banned Book Week, October 4th-10th!

The American Library Association tracked over 4,200 unique book titles targeted for censorship last year, primarily driven by challenges organized by pressure groups or officials, with fewer than 3% coming from individual parents.

Of the unique titles challenged in 2025, nearly 1,700 (40%) represent the lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ people and people of color.

Here at Southland Books, we firmly believe that fighting book bans is essential to safeguard free thought, and ensure that diverse, marginalized voices can be heard.

We stand with you and for you to ensure that our community, and especially young readers, can engage with complex ideas, build empathy for different life experiences, and learn to think for themselves.

Stop by the store today, bring the kids, and find your next read. Better yet, make it a banned book - we have plenty on the shelves!

Southland Books is Open Monday - Saturday, 10am-3pm.

We hope to see you soon!

Cathartes Aura, a.k.a., the Turkey Vulture, is the most widespread of the New World vultures. One of three species in the genus Cathartes of the family Cathartidae, the turkey vulture ranges from southern Canada to the southernmost tip of South America.

Known for their vigilance at guarding books and other eccentric collections, they are famously kept as friendly overseers in bookstores and antique shops throughout North and South America.

When properly hand-raised and bottle-fed, they have proven to be docile, kind creatures prone to long hugs and sleeping in the Mystery Aisle.

Unlike their nemeses, the common buzzard for which they are oft-confused, Turkey Vultures remain loyal for life and are adept at recognizing friends and allies in retail settings.

Come meet our favorite literary caretaker at Southland Books, Open Monday - Saturday, 10am-6pm. And, be sure to stop by the Cafe next door to grab a very fresh lunch, Monday - Saturday, 10am-3pm.
