My thoughts on the Kennedy Center as I went there after my Jimmy’s death in 2015. I looked out over the river, leaning against this historical monument, moved to another moment in my life. I felt the same as in 1963 at 8, on my way home from school. Our bus driver broadcast the news on an simple antenna radio, understand I was only in 3rd grade, but our entire ride home was silenced by the words….

A terrace visit, a silent
promenade of granite.
I glance sideways
at an old smile
only now I see nothing but
a ghost floating upward
looking down at the shell
left sitting by a vacant sea.
~~~~~~
Monuments of many,
worshiped by so few
but honored in long
gasps of pain.
They reappear
by the river
once flowing with
natives and men of
birch canoes.
So overgrown
with somber
patriots and
missionaries
who fight
for attention
in a city
of history not
meant for kings.
~~~~
I sit and wait
for these days to end
calling on one night
to turn back into day.
