All jokes aside; why are large crabs so expensive?
Couple factors and this isn’t an all of a sudden price. Large males have been this high for the past several years. Biggest factor is the price the fishermen can get for them by sending them to the east coast. Everyday, 18-wheelers full of Louisiana crab make the journey to Maryland, as their demand for crab far outpaces their local supply).
Crab docks (where the majority of crab fishermen sell their catch to) are paying on average $5 or more PER POUND for the big boys.
If I want them.. I generally have to pay a little more, as it costs a fishermen a little more to load them up and deliver to me, instead of dropping them all off at the dock. If none of my local fishermen I buy from have large crabs, I have to go through a wholesaler, which adds to the price. Wholesale guys buy from a much larger network of fishermen or directly From the docks. They’re not getting them any cheaper. Crab fishermen know they can easily get top dollar selling them to the east coast; why would they sell them locally any cheaper?
I don’t blame them at all. It’s business. It’s their livelihood. Catch is not guaranteed and expenses keep rising. So why would anyone take less than what the market is paying?
So I PAY anywhere from $5-$6/lb for large males.
Pictured below is 1 dozen, on the scale at my cost. That’s right. $50/dz is what I paid just for the crabs. And sometimes those boys are even heavier, driving that cost even higher.

Those costs have to be factored in directly. Indirect costs like the mortgage and Insurnace, electricity, permits, etc.. also have to be considered.
So yes; I absolutely agree with you that the cost is crazy! But a market exists for everything; if it’s not for you, then there’s actually no reason for you to post obscenities in the comments of local business. Or I mean you can.. I dont care. Engagement is engagement. 😂🦀🦀🦀🦀
