Coffee is one of the most under-researched and under-innovated crops in the world relative to its value.

Investment in research and development is a primary driver of productivity growth in agriculture, and coffee lags far behind other crops like wheat, fruits, and vegetables.

For instance, there is 59x more innovation in strawberry breeding than in coffee. There are 6,640 strawberry varieties registered in the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV), but only 111 coffee varieties.

The investment gap for coffee variety development is >$100 million/year. We need to close this gap so we can focus on variety innovation and produce more coffee with lower impact to the environment.
