Since 1884, this venerable New York institution with its colorful history has entertained the famous, the infamous and everyone else who appreciates the ambiance and food of a real saloon. The pay phone is still "Out of Order", the broken cigarette machine remains broken, and the ashes of one of our favorite patrons, still reside behind the bar. The wives' beer window stands open and anyone can sa

y "So, set 'em, Joe" where Johnny Mercer penned "One for My Baby". Democracy reigns in the dining room as the newsmaker rubs shoulders with the CEO sitting next to the ironworker. We welcome you for another 120 years (at least) of good food, good drink and great conversation. You can still experience the original P.J. Clarke's on Third Avenue in New York City, but if you are enjoying a show at Lincoln Center or visiting downtown Manhattan, the same great food and hospitality can be found at our Lincoln Square and Hudson River locations. We also hope you will visit us at our Washington D.C. and Philadelphia restaurants. To make a reservation, please find us on OpenTable.

Miriam and William have been coming to PJ Clarke’s for over 50 years, drawn back by the consistency, quality, and the people who make it feel like home. William, born and raised on the Upper East Side, first came to PJ Clarke’s when the drinking age was still 18. Miriam moved to New York from Colombia in the 1960s and would often bring her many suitors here.

When William entered the picture, the path wasn’t entirely smooth, but his devotion never wavered. He knew within six months he wanted to marry her, though Miriam took her time and wasn’t in a hurry. Six years later, they were married at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on 10/12/1973.

They soon moved just five blocks away from the Third Avenue location, and PJ Clarke’s became their go-to place. Now, more than 50 years later, they return with their grandchildren, ordering the same favorites: burgers, chicken pot pie, and cheesecake, and sitting at their beloved table, where Buddy Holly once proposed.

“New York keeps changing,” they told us. “But the quality and consistency of PJ Clarke’s is always there.”

Recently, while riding through Midtown, they spotted our sign from a taxi and decided to stop in for lunch and dessert. These photos were taken during that visit and we are grateful to be part of their story.
