We have set up a medical expense fundraising site for Neil. Let's show Neil our thanks and appreciation for the many years of warm, personal service, servant leadership, and delicious food.

On August 23, 2023, chef Neil at the Farmstead Cafe was taken to the emergency room for dizzyness and fatigue. He would spend 21 days in intensive care and another week in the hospital while his kidneys recovered from acute failure. While in the hospital, which is common with kidney failure, Neil...

Admittedly, social media is a cheap but expedient medium for communicating what the past 7 years have meant to all of us who have worked honestly and diligently to provide a common table in downtown Luther. Our goals in opening "The 116" have remained consistent: provide local producers a market for their goods, provide delicious and unique variations to traditional cafe fare, and deliver quality with care and kindness all at a common table that is welcome to all except those who are unwelcoming, and even to them for so long as we can tolerate them. Looking back, those goals were mostly consistently met, not more so during the two odd pandemic years we stayed open and continued business unusual. Suffice it to say we're thankful for each and every friend and customer, Luther PD and FD, local and distant vendor, the artists whose beautiful work entertained our eyes, and yes even the many politicians who spent time at the long table.

After a period of rest and reflection, along with discernment, conversations with others on possibilities, and much anxious and nervous waiting for Neil's recovery (thankfully he's doing well and the cafe's final post will soon provide information on a fundraising effort for Neil to cover extensive medical expenses), we have determined to focus our efforts beyond Farmstead Cafe and the beautiful 19th century building at 116 S. Main. We hope your experiences at the cafe with the wonderful staff and fantastic meals will be remembered fondly. With kindness and gratitude, Matthew and Jennifer Winton.

For note: The pics were taken the day before opening in May 2016.

The denim flag made by Lindy Jerlow and the Wendy Berry quote have hung in the cafe since the beginning, and each separately but similarly speak to what we have worked at over the past 7 years. Only addition to Wendell would be to add “people” to “earth.” The care of people and the earth, before profits, are our most ancient and most worthy endeavors. We are taking the next 30 days or so to meditate on what that looks like for Farmstead Cafe 2.0 and the cafe will be closed during that time. “Sabbatical” isn’t a euphemism for us and shouldn’t be for you. Give yourself the grace and freedom to consider what your next 2.0 looks like; let your community, whoever or whatever that looks like, help you meditate on it.

Some of our regulars have noticed our chef, leader, and friend Neil being away from the cafe last week. He will be back with us as soon as he bounces back in strength and health. Our love and hearts are with one of the best men in town. We ask for patience and grace as the hardworking staff runs the shop this week.
