What started as a simple community fundraiser rooted in pride and wanting to help our community turned into something I never could have imagined.

A little over a year ago, I found myself frustrated by a gap in the justice system involving orders of protection. I wrote letters, reached out to legislators, and shared what had happened. Eventually, Senator Steve Stadelman listened.

Then things got a little crazy... And by “crazy,” I mean the kind of situation that tends to happen when one particularly persistent individual decides to take a community fundraiser a little too personally and turn it into their own unhinged, uninvited, side quest.

I closed the bakery at the last minute and headed to Springfield to testify. I then followed the bill through committee, amendments, and both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly.

The new law is designed to ensure that an order of protection doesn’t suddenly become unenforceable because of an office or service delay —closing a gap that can leave someone vulnerable while the legal process is still playing catch-up.

I’m incredibly grateful to State Senator Steve Stadelman for listening, for taking my concerns seriously, and for turning my experience into meaningful change to help others across Illinois.

And I’m sharing this from my little bakery because sometimes you really can make a difference from wherever you are. Sometimes, you just have to care enough to not keep your mouth shut.

I’m incredibly proud of this little business, this community, and the fact that one small thing can grow into something much bigger than you ever imagined.

Today, bill SB3044 was officially signed into law.

And that’s pretty damn cool.
