Grandma’s Mac Salad ❤️

Every family in Hawaiʻi has their own version of mac salad, and this one is special to me because it’s my grandma’s recipe that was passed down to my dad, and now to me.

Mac salad recipes can vary from family to family — some add carrots, some add potatoes, some keep it simple — but no matter how you make it, mac salad is one of the ultimate side dishes in Hawaiʻi. It belongs next to BBQ, kalbi, laulau, chicken katsu, teriyaki chicken, and every good plate lunch. 🤙🏽

For me, recipes like this are more than just food. They’re family history. They’re the small details that keep our people connected — the way your grandma made it, the way your dad remembers it, and the way you carry it forward for the next generation.

Simple, creamy, nostalgic, and made with love.

Grandma’s Mac Salad

* 2 cups cold cooked macaroni
* 2 cups Best Foods mayonnaise

* 4 Tbsp diced onion

Meat Jun 🥚🥩🍚

Meat Jun is a Korean-style dish you might not actually find in Korea because it was created in Hawaii — thin slices of beef, marinated, coated in flour and egg, then pan-fried until golden. 🔥

It’s simple, nostalgic, and so good served over rice with mac salad, and that sweet-tangy dipping sauce.

Where is the best meat jun on the island?
Mine is Yummys or the one in Salt Lake I use to go after school (I forgot the name 😅)

Meat Jun Recipe

Ingredients

For the beef:

* 1 to 1 1/2 lbs thin sliced ribeye or NY strip
* 1/2 cup soy sauce
* 1/2 cup sugar
* 1 Tbsp minced garlic
* 1 tsp grated ginger
* 1 Thai chili, minced optional
* 1 Tbsp rice vinegar
* 1 tsp sesame oil
* 1 cup flour
* 3 to 4 eggs, beaten
* Oil for frying

Dipping Sauce:

* 1/4 cup soy sauce
* 1 Tbsp sugar
* 1 Tbsp rice vinegar
* 1 tsp sesame oil
* 1 tsp minced garlic
* 1/2 tsp grated ginger
* Thai chili optional
* Green onions for garnish

Instructions

Slice the beef thin, or use pre-sliced ribeye or NY strip.

Mix soy sauce, sugar, garlic, ginger, Thai chili, rice vinegar, and sesame oil. Add the beef and marinate for 30 minutes.

Dredge each slice of beef in flour, then dip into beaten eggs.

Fry in an oiled pan over medium heat until it’s golden on both sides.
