Ernestine Shepherd was a school secretary who had never exercised in any organized way until she was 56. Then she and her sister Mildred tried on swimsuits, didn't like what they saw, and decided to take up aerobics together. It was that simple.

Mildred died of a brain aneurysm before either of them ever competed. But Ernestine kept going. She built the physique you see here in her 60s and 70s, starting from zero in her 50s. She ran around 80 miles a week. She earned the title of oldest competitive female bodybuilder in the world in 2010 and 2011.

Here's what matters: this isn't about extreme athleticism or some genetic lottery. This is about what your body is capable of when you actually ask it to do something. At 56, Ernestine's body had never been challenged in that way. By 74, she had a six-pack and the strength to back it up. She didn't start because she was young or because she had always been fit. She started because her sister suggested it, and that mattered enough to show up.

Age is nothing but a number — and your body doesn't know what year you were born. It only knows whether you're asking it to work.
