Join us on Sunday, December 7 at 2 PM at the Los Angeles Public Library for a unique program celebrating LA’s food history.

As part of her Creator in Residence work, Sohn-mat co-author Tien Nguyen has been exploring the Library’s renowned Menu Collection, sharing insights into how menus reflect the cultural and culinary shifts of Los Angeles.

Among the collection is Monica Lee’s very first menu from 1986—a beautifully crafted piece made from a gourd.

Tien and Monica will reunite to discuss the stories behind the menu, its place in LA’s Korean food history, and what it means to preserve these moments for future generations.

“David Chang invites a master of the soft-tofu arts to demonstrate her signature dish in the MajordomoTV Studio. It’s a classic Korean dish, made by one of its greatest practitioners.

For almost 35 years, Monica Lee’s restaurant, Beverly Soon Tofu, anchored Koreatown in LA with its small cauldrons of made-to-order sundubu-jjigae (soft-tofu stew). If you’ve never had it, don’t let the word “soft” fool you. Made with beef bone broth, ripe kimchi, and gochujang, Monica’s sundubu-jjigae is fiery, aromatic, and scalding hot—just the way it should be.”
