A little more information about the flags on Longboat Key on September 11th:

In 2003, the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce had an idea. To put out 2,974 American flags from one end of Longboat Key to the other.

Thanks to members of the LBK Chamber and the residents who originally contributed to the purchase of the flags and to Reed Savidge, Longboat Ace Hardware, who provided the flags at a discount and has continued to replaced flags every year, when needed, at no cost.

And, without the Town of Longboat Key Public Works Department, their idea would have never been possible. Every year since 2003, employees of that department have put out all the flags on Gulf of Mexico Drive--evenly spaced from bridge to bridge!! We are grateful for the Town's support.

If you have never been to Longboat Key on 9-11, you should make a trip out today. You will be impressed and humbled at the same time!
