Justin Rudd, a true Long Beach hero and the city’s unofficial patron saint of community engagement, is celebrating his birthday on June 6th! Know what he wants this year? He wants you to gather up some of your gently used clothes and shoes and donate ‘em.

June 1st through 7th marks the 13th Annual Clothing & Shoe Drive for the Homeless. You can drop them in the chute to the left of the double doors at Christian Outreach in Action, located at 515 E 3rd Street, OR walk them into the office of the Bay Shore Church at 5100 E. The Toledo before 2 PM any day during that week.

For the past twelve years, this drive has collected and distributed truckloads of goods to various homeless service agencies in the LB. Let’s keep up the good work.

PORT GONNA TAKE YOU ON A SEA CRUISE

Come aboard for a fun-filled excursion that will get you up close and personal to towering cranes, the gorgeous Gerald Desmond Bridge, and maybe even some playful marine life as you tour the second-busiest Port in the USA. It’s time, once again, for the fabulous and FREE harbor tours hosted by the Port of Long Beach.

Tours run from May thru September and last about an hour and a half. They depart from one of two docks across from the Aquarium of the Pacific, so just park at the Aquarium and look around. That parking will be validated once you’re out on the water, and it's good for the whole day. Yay!

You will have to register, natch, and you can do that on the website. Just fill out the online form, choose a date, and note how many people will be with you. They only allow 4, so only invite your besties or bring your favorite kid. 😜 You’ll get an email confirming either the date you chose or that you’re on a waiting list, within 5 business days.

Did you know that May Day baskets are a tradition of leaving secret gifts like flowers, treats, or toys for neighbors and friends to celebrate the arrival of spring on May 1st? And did you know that same day is celebrated as International Workers’ Day and the birth of the labor unions? Oh! And, did you know that the May Pole is a ph***ic symbol speaking to all things springy and procreational? Is that a word? Anyway, May Day is a lot.

So, whether you choose to celebrate the beautiful flowers that just bloomed in your yard, take a spin around a Maypole in full-on Ren Faire regalia, or lift a glass or two at the Queen’s Wharf Lounge to honor the good folks who fought for workers’ rights and an 8-hour workday, May 1st is definitely time to party! LOVING EACH OTHER TO THE BONE

The “March for Marrow 5K Run and Patient and Family Walk” is a running and walking event for patients with bone marrow disease, their families, friends, and supporters. This marks their 16th annual event in the LB. We love that.

The run/walk will take place on April 26 at 8 AM, but they also offer “virtual” participation on April 20th. We don’t fully understand how that works, but basically, you register, show up online at the given time, and monetarily support the cause without leaving your house. It’s a way to go.

For everyone else, participants will enjoy their run/walk along the lovely LB shoreline, assembling for the day’s events, awards, and celebration at Shoreline Village. Before the big day, you’ll need to register online. https://runsignup.com/Race/Register/?raceId=195213

The goal is to raise some sweet moolah and more donors for the bone marrow registry. Every dollar supports patients living with bone marrow diseases through treatment and research. Excellent.

Not only is this April Fools Day, it’s also the full moon! The bot we asked reports that this moon, known as the Pink Moon (bot didn’t offer what that’s about), is associated with Libra, sign of balance and harmony. It will illuminate emotional clarity helping us release what no longer serves and seize every fresh, golden opportunity.

Come celebrate the Olympic Para Games at the 2026 Long Beach Para-Party! This community soiree will feature a program, activity tables, and other event accoutrement, followed by the Paralympic opening ceremonies at City Hall.

Long Beach will proudly serve as a major Venue City for the 2028 Olympics, taking place July 14-30, and the Paralympic Games, taking place Aug. 15-27. Some of the Paralympic events include climbing, swimming, rowing, canoeing, and a shooting event to be held at the LB Convention Center. Long Beach is committed to inclusivity and athletic excellence, and these events will provide a stage for both.

Preparations for the 2028 Games are already underway in Long Beach. In fact, the LB is set to host the largest number of sporting events other than Los Angeles! Yeah, that’s awesome. Yeah, Long Beach ROCKS. Meanwhile, let’s kick off the Paralympics Games with enthusiasm, joy, and great big hearts.
