On this day in 1939, the Queen Mary went dark. 📰🚢

On September 2, during her final peacetime crossing, crew members blacked out the ship’s portholes as war approached Europe. The very next day, Britain and France declared war on Germany, marking the beginning of a chapter that would ultimately transform the Queen Mary from luxury ocean liner to wartime troopship.

Look closely at these original 1939 editions of the “Ocean Times,” published aboard the Queen Mary during that very crossing. The headlines capture history unfolding in real time, including the September 2 front page declaring “Outbreak of Hostilities on Polish Borders.”

A remarkable glimpse into what passengers aboard the Queen Mary were reading as the world, and the ship’s own future, was about to change.
