There are seriously SO many things that I had to leave out for the sake of time, and honestly, once I get started it’s hard to stop talking sometimes. 😅
So I’ll just say it here-
My husband has dealt with symptoms for 8 years. In my video, I talk about seeing lots of doctors. We saw lots of different doctors, and 8 years ago, alpha gal wasn’t really a big thing. But nowadays, more and more people are being diagnosed. My husband has seen multiple different dermatologists, family practitioners, allergists. He was told to switch to gentle/fragrance free soaps & laundry detergent, was told he was allergic to Ibuprofen, misdiagnosed with chronic hives- but finally, we found out it was alpha gal.
Before the diagnosis, we were BIG read meat and dairy consumers. Like….we love butter, we love milk, we love beef. Seriously, my husband makes the BEST steak. R.I.P. steak dinners 😭 Since the diagnosis, I’ve had to pretty much overhaul all of my recipes, and completely cut out others. Now, don’t get me wrong- when dad is away for some reason, the kids and I will still eat mammal.
In my video, I talk about cross contamination, and how that makes eating out difficult. We really never ate out a whole bunch before the diagnosis, but what’s really changed is that we can’t just go through the drive-thru anywhere if we’re out and about. Even if you order chicken, it’s most likely going to be cross contaminated. What I don’t talk about is how it’s even hard eating at family get togethers. Imagine going to thanksgiving dinner with your family, but you can’t eat the stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans casserole, sweet potato casserole, mac n cheese, or the pumpkin pie. 😭😭
There are legit so many mammal byproducts in all the different things we use, whether we are eating it, taking it as medicine, or applying it topically to our skin.
The cost of groceries is already astronomical, but then add in the special “vegan” foods, like the oat milk, oat milk coffee creamer, dairy free yogurts, dairy free sour cream, vegan cheese (okay, this one isn’t a MUST), etc. Y’all get the picture, right?
I also speak on how I lost my favorite taste tester! This was his favorite part of my baking all these years. All of the things I make for the bakery are still filled with butter and milk(excluding the sourdough)…so now he just doesn’t get to taste them all anymore. I try my very best to still make the things he can eat and adapt recipes so that he still gets to enjoy them. But not everything can be adapted. Sometimes he will still sneak a taste regardless of the ingredients, though. He still likes to live life on the edge.
