How to say goodbye.
This is the struggle. It has not fully set in, and sitting here this morning, this bit needs to be done, as so many of you have made Hā what it is. You are the threads and fabric of our community. That sort of thing, you don't have to say goodbye to. But you do have to find a way to say something about the space that it planted, grew and thrived in.
And how it's going away.
We actually are almost to our 7th Anniversary. During the last 6 months, we have stayed open with the purpose of keeping our people paid and insured, along with continuing to serve the community as a place to gather, work, study and share life together. We worked out a plan to defer part of our rent, and we were able to stay open. It's been a long walk for all of us together.
Monday we received a letter from a law firm asking us to either 1) make immediate payment of that deferred rent or 2) face eviction. We contacted the firm w/a proposal for repayment based around the unknown on Kaua'i, but it was refused & countered w/a proposal that was not possible for us to accept, both legally & financially, due to our non-profit status. It has put all of us here at Hā in a difficult spot.
You have been amazing over the last 6 months. You have blown us away again and again with your generosity & kindness. We had hoped to return the favor, but right now, it looks like it just isn't meant to be.
So, if you have ideas, contacts, opportunities, or just want to help, let us know, as we have some great people that we would love to continue to support. We are working on a few plans as well, and will keep you posted.
No matter what, you are stuck with us in some form or another. We will continue to build new things, and look toward new stories to be told. This is not the end, it's just a beginning that we all did not expect. We have hearts full of thankfulness and respect for a bigger story that is always at work.
That said we will continue to stay open as long as we can as they go through the eviction process. Still cranking, still paying folks, still thankful.
