Every now and then I’ll go through images from over the years. While I’d like to believe I’m pretty good at organizing, I have a habit of holding onto images. Because you just never know. There’s thousands of images that I’ve never shared. Funny thing is, when I started shooting barbecue in 2005, I never planned on sharing any. It just didn’t occur to me folks would be interested. Goes to show how little I knew. It wouldn’t be until early 2013 that I’d share my first image, on Twitter. Then I was published in Texas Monthly in July 2013. And as they say, the rest is history.
This previously unshared image is from Kim Beisert Bexley taken on July 13, 2013 at 7:19am. I had spent the entire morning with the crew, creating pictures with Tootsie, Kerry and Hershey. Back then, I really had no plan of attack. I’d just look for moments I thought were interesting and fire away. Sometimes it worked out, most times it did not. People would ask me about the technical aspects of my camera and shots. I had no clue. I didn’t really immerse myself in the craft. It was just something fun to do when I wasn’t working. Eventually I realized this could be a thing and taught myself. Over the years I’ve been blessed to work with some of the best in the industry. And now I do this full-time. It’s been a wild ride. Maybe down the road I’ll have to get another “real job,” but right now I’m good, taking it one shot at a time. Appreciate y’all for riding along all these years. 🙏🏼
