I'll be honest with you — the first time somebody handed me a glass of whiskey and started talking about "finish" and "mouthfeel," I nodded along and had no idea what they meant. Took me years to figure out I actually liked the stuff. I just didn't have anybody to explain it.
That's why we're putting on Whiskey for Beginners at the 1830 Chophouse Event Center on Tuesday, August 25, from 6:00 to 7:30.
I brought in the guys from Scotch 4 Dummies — the YouTube channel — to host it, because they do this without any of the snobbery. And I didn't cheap out on the pours. Here's the lineup:
1. Heaven Hill 7 Year Bottled-in-Bond Straight Bourbon — our starting point, and a really good one. Classic Kentucky.
2. WhistlePig 10 Year Straight Rye — where you'll feel the difference between bourbon and rye for the first time. Spice, pepper, backbone.
3. Glenmorangie Single Malt, Harrison Ford Limited Release — a scotch that doesn't drink like what most people expect scotch to taste like. This one changes minds.
4. Bushmills 16 Year Irish Whiskey — smooth, triple-distilled, and a nice reset after the scotch.
Bonus pour: Lagavulin 16 Year Single Malt — peat, smoke, and the ocean. You'll either love it or hate it. Nobody's ever neutral.
You'll also get a welcome dram when you walk in and appetizers out of our kitchen. And by the end you'll actually know how to nose a glass and taste what's in it.
We're keeping this small on purpose. If you've been whiskey-curious, or you've been drinking it for twenty years and never knew why you liked what you liked — come sit down with us.
