Did you know Lawrenceville’s oldest church is still going strong?

Fairview Presbyterian Church was founded way back in 1823 by just 13 determined folks who wanted “to walk in all the commandments of the Lord.” Within ten years, that tiny group grew to more than 150 members, making it the “mother church” that helped give rise to other Presbyterian congregations across Gwinnett.

And here’s the cool part: they’ve been worshiping on the same hill just west of town for over 200 years! Some of the original design features, like siding and stained-glass windows, still reflect those early roots.

Just a year later, in 1824, Lawrenceville’s very first school, Lawrenceville Academy, was founded, showing just how much this little community valued both faith and education from the very beginning.

👉 Have you ever visited Fairview Presbyterian Church, or do you have family stories tied to its history? We’d love to hear your memories in the comments!

Learn more about the history of our city and county!

If Gwinnett County had a scrapbook, its pages would be stitched together with brick courthouses, log cabins, and farmsteads that whisper stories older than most of our family trees. For all its modern hustle—tech corridors, cul-de-sacs, and new developments—Gwinnett’s roots run deep, and its l...

Ever had one of those weeks where EVERYTHING goes wrong?

Well, Lawrenceville seriously had one of those decades in the mid-1800s, and let’s just say it was rough.

Back in 1850, Lawrenceville was booming, with over 11,000 residents, a busy cotton mill, and big dreams ahead. Everything was looking up… until war turned the town upside down.

In 1864, Union troops marched in and *p**f* the cotton mill was gone. And as if that wasn’t enough, in 1871, the courthouse burned to the ground, taking most of the town’s early records with it. (Imagine losing your birth certificate, marriage license, and receipts all in a giant, fiery bonfire. Ouch. 🔥)

But the spirit of Lawrenceville wasn’t easily extinguished. The community rallied and built a grander courthouse in 1885, now a beloved landmark with beautiful architecture and stories to tell. A real, and literal, comeback from the ashes!

Fun fact: Built on the charred remains of its predecessor, you can still spot smoke-damaged bricks in the basement and foundation, history you can see with your own eyes!

Moral of the story? When life burns down your courthouse… rebuild it with style, and maybe throw in a clocktower to boot!

Did you know? 🇺🇸⚓️
James Lawrence, a U.S. Navy officer during the War of 1812, became a legend for his dying words: “Don’t give up the ship!” That rallying cry still echoes in naval tradition today, and where we got the name for Lawrenceville, Georgia.
