Special Election!

As the city parts ways with our beloved Bruce Johnson we need to fill the vacant City Council seat left by an incredibly impactful member of the community.

Early voting is October 13-24 and October 26-30 at Lawrenceville City Hall, 9:00am to 5:00pm

IF YOU WANT TO RUN-

Interested candidates can qualify for office September 21–23 at the City Clerk’s office, located inside Lawrenceville City Hall. The office will be open for qualifying from 8:30 a.m. to noon and again from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.

City of Lawrenceville Calls Special Election for November 3

The Lawrenceville City Council called a Special Municipal Election for Tuesday, November 3, 2026, during a Special Called Meeting held September 9, 2026.

The qualifying period for candidates interested in running for election to fill Council Post 1 will be held from:
September 21–23, 2026
8:30 AM –12:00 PM and 1:00–4:30 PM

Municipal Election Superintendent (City Clerk’s Office)

Don’t Give Up the Ship: How Lawrenceville Got Its Name

Lawrenceville carries a dying sailor’s last command in its name.

When the city was incorporated in 1821, local leaders named it for Captain James Lawrence, a U.S. Navy officer and hero of the War of 1812. Eight years earlier, Lawrence had commanded the USS Chesapeake in a fierce battle against the British ship HMS Shannon.

Mortally wounded during the fight, he reportedly told his crew, “Don’t give up the ship!”

Lawrence died three days later at age 31. His ship was captured, but his words endured as a Navy motto and a symbol of courage under pressure.

More than two centuries later, we still say his name when we give an address, talk about downtown, or tell someone where home is.

The next time you see “Lawrenceville” on a street sign, remember the story tucked inside it.

Slow Pour Brewing Releases Beer That Takes Nine Months to Pour

Slow Pour Brewing Company has announced its boldest release yet: the Patience IPA, a beer so committed to the slow pour that it takes a full nine months to fill a glass.

“We looked at the name on the building and asked ourselves if we were really living up to it,” said a brewmaster. The first keg is expected to be ready sometime next spring, or the spring after that. Nobody is quite sure, and that is the point.

Welcome to The Lawrence: Downtown’s First Boutique Hotel Just Opened

Big news on Crogan Street — The Lawrence, a 120-room Hilton Tapestry hotel, is now open, the first upscale boutique hotel downtown has ever had. Between Bellfire’s wood-fired Southern-Mediterranean menu and Old Nick’s (named for a fire-hauling mule!), this is a whole new reason to show off our square. Who’s already planning a staycation night or a date night at Bellfire? 🍽️

Did you know Lawrenceville’s oldest church is still going strong?

Fairview Presbyterian Church was founded way back in 1823 by just 13 determined folks who wanted “to walk in all the commandments of the Lord.” Within ten years, that tiny group grew to more than 150 members, making it the “mother church” that helped give rise to other Presbyterian congregations across Gwinnett.

And here’s the cool part: they’ve been worshiping on the same hill just west of town for over 200 years! Some of the original design features, like siding and stained-glass windows, still reflect those early roots.

Just a year later, in 1824, Lawrenceville’s very first school, Lawrenceville Academy, was founded, showing just how much this little community valued both faith and education from the very beginning.
