I got a call at work from someone wanting to order a cake — specifically a lemon blueberry cake. As she began explaining why, my heart sank.
She told me it was her sister’s absolute favorite cake. She had missed the opportunity to get her a slice when we had it available at the restaurant, so she wanted to order a whole cake for her sister’s birthday.
Then she shared that, unfortunately, this would probably be her sister’s last birthday. She is currently battling stage 4 cancer.
I’ve made many first birthday cakes over the years. Cakes celebrating new beginnings, new chapters, and little lives just beginning. But I’ve never made a last birthday cake.
There was something incredibly humbling about being trusted with such a meaningful part of someone’s special day. Knowing that this cake wasn’t just a dessert, but a small piece of joy and love for a sister who means so much to her family, made it truly special.
It was an absolute honor to make this cake. 💜
I hope it brought her the sweetest birthday, and that every bite tasted a little bit like love. 🎂🫐🍋
