The Castañeda Hotel was proudly designed by Frederic Roehrig in the Spanish Mission Revival style. Spanning 30,000 square feet, it continues to inspire travelers from around the world with its audaciously decorated hallways, luscious vegetation, and a semi-wrap-around courtyard that looks out over the arriving trains. The hotel's magnificent design—with its brick facade and charming cupola—is a prime example of thematic architecture, intentionally evoking the aesthetic of its historic surroundings.
When Allan Affeldt and his team began restoring the hotel, one of their greatest challenges wasn't immediately obvious to the naked eye. To see it, you have to compare photos from before and after the restoration: the raising of the hotel’s arcade walkways. To improve public accessibility and safety, the team painstakingly elevated the entire arcade. Today, the Castañeda remains a dominant, beautiful fixture in the skyline of Las Vegas, New Mexico.
