US 64 W Road Closure

The North Carolina Department of Transportation will be shutting down US 64 W between Cashiers and Highlands, North Carolina next week. The closure will be in place all day, Wednesday, February 18th. The closure is to ensure safety of all citizens and agencies while removing the propane tanker that was in an accident, and went over the embankment in late January.

Once the truck is removed, the North Carolina Department of Transportation will immediately begin repairs to the roadway and replace the guardrail. Officials expect the road to reopen and return to normal traffic early Thursday morning.

Zeb Holland, Director of Jackson County Emergency Management, would like to thank the community for their patience and understanding during both the previous and upcoming closures. Holland said, “We know these closures have created some travel inconveniences for many people, but the safety of our citizens and first responders will always remain our top priority." He encourages everyone to plan ahead, find an alternate route, and allow extra travel time when heading to their destinations on Wednesday the 18th.
