Here's a question for our historical Monday post:

Who remembers the early days of Havasu Landing?

Did you cruise across the lake for a bite at the Sail Inn Café back in the 1970s? Or maybe your family had a little cabin at “The Colony”? Drop your memories below — we want to hear them! 👇

Havasu Landing (on the California side of Lake Havasu in San Bernardino County) has always been that chill, beautiful spot right across from Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Today it’s home to the Havasu Landing Resort & Casino, run by the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe, with a full marina, RV park, campground, airstrip, lodging, boating, gaming, and more.

A Quick Fun History Lesson:

Long before the lake existed, the Chemehuevi (Nuwu) people — along with the Mojave — called this stunning desert-river country home for thousands of years. “Havasu” even comes from the Mojave words for that beautiful blue-green water!

Then came Parker Dam in the 1930s, which created Lake Havasu. The tribe lost thousands of acres of ancestral land but showed incredible resilience. Federal recognition was restored in 1970, and in 1974, the Chemehuevi Tribe purchased Havasu Landing Resort — turning it into a thriving tribal enterprise.

From a quiet shoreline spot with cabins and a little café to today’s modern resort with marina, casino, and events — it’s come a long way while staying true to its roots.

Whether you’re a longtime local, a snowbird, or just love the quieter California side, Havasu Landing still has that special magic.

Step back in time to where it all began at Thompson Bay. Before the modern docks, the paved walkways, and the bustling resort lines, this was the view that welcomed Lake Havasu’s very first pioneers.🌊

​The Original Playground: In the late 1960s and early '70s, this rugged stretch of shoreline was the ultimate launching pad for flat-bottom boats, early outboards, and weekend adventurers who weren't afraid of a little desert sand.

​A Vision in the Desert: It was right here that Robert McCulloch and C.V. Wood looked past the dirt and saw the future of a master-planned community—anchored by what would become the city's premier beachfront resort.

​Spot the Classic: Check out that vintage Jeep Wagoneer parked right on the beach!

​We’ve grown a bit since the days of dirt roads and untamed shorelines, but the spirit of lakeside adventure hasn't changed a bit.
