A post from a delivery driver falsely claiming I took some of his tip money has generated a lot of criticism of Duetto. If I had taken the money the criticism would be deserved, but I didn't. Furthermore, I never take my share of tips even when I work a shift. The fact is we were hired a month ago to cater an event -- a post-wedding party. The client included a $100 tip for our event service and paid for everything, including the tip, days before the event. For these types of events we normally share the tips with the kitchen staff who work extra hard to get the event food out as well as the normal orders. The tip was NEVER intended to solely go to the delivery driver. I told the driver early on the day of the event that he would be getting a $50 tip for the delivery (he was thrilled). Once he found out the customer tipped Duetto $100 he was outraged--demanded the entire tip. I told him he was getting the $50 I promised him and he told me I was stealing from him. The next day he went to Duetto and tried to get an unsuspecting employee to give him $50. When that failed he decided to turn the internet mob on us to ruin our reputation.
Another key point is that the driver was never a Duetto employee; he, like all our drivers, was an independent contractor, a car for hire. As such we paid him a flat shift fee + tips. In his post he made people think he was an employee, entitled to an hourly wage, and that we weren't paying him one.
Duetto appreciates the service community and our employees. We have several employees that have been with us for 8 and 9 years. We also donate food and money to countless organizations in town. If you follow us you know that. We won't let the internet trolls negate any of that.
