Some interesting facts to learn about the King Crabbing Industry and why King Crab is pricey - The Red King Crab is from North West Alaska, by Norton Sound in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Chain Islands. Close to the Russian border. 8 days by boat from SE Alaska. In deep, icy cold waters in a very dangerous ocean mass. Alaska is a Fifth of the size of the Lower 48 States combined. There is only 2.1mil lb available to the entire US market, down from 200mil in the 80’s and 90’s. In 2021 and 2022 the fishery was closed down by NOAA due to a collapse in Red King Crab numbers. It is a very dangerous job for them to get us the delicious crab, fishing trawlers has wiped the ocean floor with their nets and cause bycatch and broken and dead crab.. Sea temperatures have risen and this enables Alaskan cod fish and other predators to plunder the crab stocks when the crab go deeper and molt to shed their shell and grow.. nice soft crab that can not protect themselves against predators that have a further reach in warmer waters.. Red King Crab is the best crab in the world. A very fragile industry. Golden King Crab is sustainable industry, it is much smaller and has less meat content than the large Red King Crab, which is referred to as The diamond of the ocean and lets hope we can still enjoy this delicacy for a few more years.
