Hey everyone! Unfortunately, El Gr**go Loco will be CLOSED tonight. (9/1)

The heat did some work on us 🄵 and we ran into an issue with one of our refrigeration units trying to keep up today. While everything has been kept at safe temperatures, we’re not willing to take any chances when it comes to the food we serve.

We have someone coming out tomorrow morning to get everything checked out, and we’ll be back at it as soon as we’re good to go.

Sorry for the inconvenience, and thank you guys for understanding.

Food safety comes first.

I don’t do these posts enough, but today I want to give some love and appreciation to Jesse Scott.

If you’ve supported El Gr**go Loco over the years, there’s a really good chance Jesse had something to do with the food you ate.

This dude has been beside me for four years now. Through the food truck days, the crazy events, long nights, stressful days, broken equipment, huge crowds, slow nights, and now somehow watching this little food truck turn into an actual restaurant.

And when I say beside me, I mean it. Jesse isn’t just someone who comes in, clocks in and goes home. He’s the guy I can look at when everything is going completely to crap and somehow we just figure it out. šŸ˜‚

He’s also the dude who, when I’m the one running behind or having some rough days like I have lately, will come in two hours before he’s supposed to just because he knows I need the help. Nobody has to ask him. That’s just the kind of person he is.

He’s made an effort to know my family, even trying to learn a little Spanish so he can talk to them. And if you know Jesse, you know there’s nothing fake about this dude. What you see is what you get.

There have been plenty of times where I genuinely don’t know how I would’ve pulled something off without him.

But more importantly, somewhere along the way Jesse stopped just being an employee. He became one of my best friends and honestly, like a brother to me.

I’ve gotten to watch him grow and hopefully teach him a few things along the way, but the truth is he’s taught me plenty too.

Building a business is hard. Having somebody who believes in what you’re doing enough to stick around through all the chaos makes it a whole lot easier.

So if you see Jesse back there cooking your food sometime, show my dude some love.

El Gr**go Loco wouldn’t be what it is today without you, brother. I appreciate the hell out of you more than you’ll ever know. ā¤ļøšŸŒ®

🚨 REMINDER — WE’RE CLOSED TODAY! 🚨

But look at this beautiful place we get to set up at today! šŸ˜šŸŒ®šŸ–¤šŸ’›

We’re spending the day in Iowa City serving University of Iowa graduate students right behind the IMU!

Days like today are always a good reminder of how lucky we are to get to do what we do. We love coming up here, meeting new people, seeing familiar faces, and being a small part of the energy around campus.

We’re incredibly grateful for all the support the University of Iowa has shown El Gr**go Loco over the years. šŸ–¤šŸ’›

A little schedule change this week! šŸ–¤šŸ’›

We’ll be closed Wednesday and Friday as El Gr**go Loco heads to Iowa City for a couple of University of Iowa events. Wednesday at the Department of Health and Friday at Kinnick Stadium for Kickoff at Kinnick for the incoming freshman.

I always hate closing the restaurant, but the University of Iowa has supported El Gr**go Loco tremendously and has been a huge part of getting us to where we are today. These are opportunities that we’re incredibly grateful for, and every once in a while, they’re events we just can’t pass up.

Thank you to everyone here in Keota for continuing to support us and for understanding when we have to hit the road. It’s pretty damn cool getting to take a little piece of El Gr**go Loco to Iowa City. šŸŒ®šŸ–¤šŸ’›

Sitting here late tonight, having a couple cocktails and looking around this place, and damn… it’s pretty cool watching El Gr**go Loco slowly come alive.

The more consistent we’ve gotten with our hours, the more people seem to be finding us. People are coming in for dinner, hanging around for cocktails, stopping in later at night just to chill, and our staff has been getting more and more compliments. I’ve seen some really nice reviews lately too, and I seriously couldn’t ask for a better start to this chapter of El Gr**go Loco.

I’m not gonna lie… at first, I fu***ng hated it. šŸ˜‚

I was scared. I’d never done anything like this before, and there were days where I felt like all I was doing was disappointing people. I questioned whether we were doing any of this right.

But here we are.

We’re learning. We’re improving. We’re getting more comfortable. And it finally feels like we’ve got a little something going here.

We’re nowhere near done either. We’re just gonna keep adding, changing, listening and trying to be a little better than we were the day before.

And especially to the people of Keota who come through later at night, grab a drink, hang out with us and give this little crazy idea of mine a chance, seriously, y’all are the s**t.

I’m happy tonight. ā¤ļø

Thank you for letting us build this thing with you.

Hey everyone!

We just wanted to say thank you for all of the feedback we’ve been getting. Whether it’s a compliment or a critique, we really do read it all!

A few of you mentioned not loving the paper liners in our baskets because they can stick to the food. And I completely understand. We hear you loud and clear! We’ve ordered plates, and they’ll be here soon.

We’ve also received a few comments about our chips being a little too well done at times. Thank you for being honest with us. Sometimes you don’t know what you don’t know, and your feedback helps us catch those things.

Our goal has never been to be perfect. Because that’s impossible. Our goal is simply to be a little better than we were yesterday. We’ll keep listening, keep learning, and keep improving because that’s what you deserve.

We appreciate every single one of you for giving us a chance (sometimes multiple šŸ™‚) and helping us grow.

Love you guys. ā¤ļø See you soon!

Holy smokes… as I sit here getting ready to clean up tonight, I can’t help but think about this past week.

So many people stopped in and told us how great the place looks. Friends came by to support us. Even on what was otherwise a slower Saturday night, we had a group hang out, enjoy some drinks, and remind me that every customer matters.

The guys that stayed until close tonight were just four younger dudes talking sports, drinking Busch Lights, and hanging out. I found myself standing there talking sports with them for a while too. Honestly, those are the kinds of nights I hope this place becomes known for. A place where people can come, relax, have a good meal, grab a drink, and enjoy each other’s company.

One comment in particular really stuck with me. We had a couple come in who had moved here from California, and the husband told me our tacos were the closest thing to the tacos back in Los Angeles that he’s had since leaving. Holy smokes… that struck a nerve, in the best possible way. Hearing something like that means more than I can put into words.

Since we were a little short on servers today, I ended up bouncing back and forth between taking orders up front and running back to help Jesse in the kitchen. Normally I’m stuck cooking most of the night, so I don’t get much time to interact with everyone. But today I actually got to slow down, talk with people, joke around, and hear everyone’s stories. I forgot how much I enjoy that part of this business. Those conversations give me energy and remind me why I love doing this.

At one point my right hand man, Jesse, looked around during one of the slower stretches and said, ā€œYou know… we’re not that busy, but almost everybody in here has been here before.ā€ Then he smiled and said, ā€œGood thing for your regulars.ā€

That really hit me.

To all of our regulars, seriously, thank you. You probably don’t even realize it, but your support is what carries small businesses through nights like that. Whether it’s stopping in for dinner, grabbing a drink, bringing a friend, or just hanging out talking sports, you’re helping us build something special. We don’t take that for granted.

It wasn’t our busiest week, but it was one of my favorite weeks because it reminded me why we opened this place in the first place.

Football season is almost here, and I can’t wait to roll out some game day specials and cheer on our hawksļæ¼. Once we’re fully settled in, we’d also love to start doing things like trivia nights and other events that bring everyone together.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for welcoming us, supporting us, and believing in us. We can’t wait to see you again soon. ā¤ļøšŸŒ®šŸ»
