Last night, the Clubhouse lost a member of our family. Our dear friend Jerry Lewis passed away at 94 years old, leaving us with decades of memories, laughter, and plenty of smart-ass remarks. ❤️
Jerry had been coming to the Clubhouse since he was a young paperboy, back when Grandma Mary ran the place. She even served him his first drink before he was legally old enough. Apparently, his history with us began with a little mischief—and he kept that tradition going. 😂
He had his own seat, his own parking spot, his own coffee cup, and his own coffee warmer. At that point, we were pretty much operating a bar inside Jerry’s living room.
He loved baseball and we had to have his baseball channel on when he sat down. his love for the Cleveland Indians was above all, and he had absolutely no intention of approving that name change. He also loved a good joke, especially when it involved giving Corrie hell. The two of them would go back and forth while Jerry enjoyed the reactions of anyone who thought they were actually arguing. Don’t let the sweet old man act fool you—he was usually the instigator.
He claimed he hated Corrie’s Snapchat filters, but somehow always had a ridiculous face, his tongue out, or a middle finger ready for the picture. For someone who supposedly didn’t want to participate, he had excellent timing.
Behind all that mischief was a thoughtful man who loved his Clubhouse girls. Christmas cards, birthday cards, Valentine’s —Jerry always remembered them and made sure they knew he cared.
Over the years, we celebrated plenty of his birthdays. On his 90th, he joked with Matt that he hoped he wouldn’t make it to the next one because he was scared of what Corrie would plan. Thankfully, he gave us four more years of birthdays, laughter, and reasons to keep the camera handy.
During COVID, Jerry showed up while we were remodeling. When Corrie worried about him getting sick, he reminded her that he’d survived war and plenty of life, and he wasn’t going to sit at home when he could be with the people he loved. That was Jerry: stubborn as hell, full of spirit, and happiest among his people.
Jerry helped make the Clubhouse feel like home. His seat will feel empty, but the stories he gave us will be told here for years to come.
Rest easy, Jerry— you old coot. Find Uncle Joe, and give him a hug and tell him how much we miss him. it comforts us just imagining the two of you together again, catching up and giving each other hell.
With love from your Clubhouse family. You’ll always have a stool here. ❤️
