Your Green Gecko Moment…

Green Gecko Farm – We are retiring from the coffee business.

With mixed feelings, we are announcing today that Green Gecko Coffee is no longer be available.

We have decided to retire from the coffee business, and wanted to thank you for supporting us for the past 15 years. With the help of many in the Kona Coffee community and assistance from our partners: The Four Seasons Huluali, Alan Wong’s Restaurant, and Pueo’s Osteria we have built a community that spans the world. We will miss you.

The new owner of the property has decided not to continue the Green Gecko heritage. For those of you who are interested in a recommendation, we suggest that you try Lehuula Farms (http://lehuulafarms.com/store.html). This farm is located about 2 miles away, the property is at approximately the same altitude, and we have benefited from the advice and knowledge of the owners (Bob & Mae Nelson) and the operators (Brian and Amy Axelrod) since we began our operation. Their closest coffee to ours is the Premium Coffee, Medium Roast. Note that they offer free USPS shipping with orders of 5 pounds or more.

A hui ho, and many thanks for your support,

Green Gecko Farm – BBC Article on the health benefits of coffee.

We at Green Gecko Coffee promote not only sustainable farming practices, but promote the benefits and general knowledge of coffee. Green Gecko’s company or LLC is Kealaola LLC, Kealaola means “pathway to life, pathway to health” in the Hawaiian language. We came across this BBC article by Philipps Roxby on the health benefits of coffee as such which to share it with you.

We hope that you enjoy this health informative article while you are sipping on one of your three mugs of smooth 100% Kona full bodied Green Gecko Coffee knowing that it not only tastes great, but is good for you.

Three cups of coffee a day 'may have health benefits'; By Philippa Roxby Health reporter, BBC News.

“Moderate coffee drinking is safe, and three to four cups a day may have some health benefits, according to a large review of studies, in the BMJ. It found a lower risk of liver disease and some cancers in coffee drinkers, and a lower risk of dying from stroke - but researchers could not prove coffee was the cause. Too much coffee during pregnancy could be harmful, the review confirmed.

Experts said people should not start drinking coffee for health reasons.

The University of Southampton researchers collected data on the impact of coffee on all aspects of the human body, taking into account more than 200 studies - most of which were observational.
• Coffee drinkers may live longer, and
• Cancer risk from coffee downgraded, and
• Is the UK reaching coffee shop saturation point?

Compared with non-coffee drinkers, those who drank about three cups of coffee a day appeared to reduce their risk of getting heart problems or dying from them. The strongest benefits of coffee consumption were seen in reduced risks of liver disease, including cancer. But Prof Paul Roderick, co-author of the study, from the faculty of medicine at University of Southampton, said the review could not say if coffee intake had made the difference. "Factors such as age, whether people smoked or not and how much exercise they took could all have had an effect," he said.

The findings back up other recent reviews and studies of coffee drinking so, overall, his message on coffee was reassuring. "There is a balance of risks in life, and the benefits of moderate consumption of coffee seem to outweigh the risks," he said.
The NHS recommends pregnant women have no more than 200mg of caffeine a day - two mugs of instant coffee - because too much can increase the risk of miscarriage. This review suggests women at risk of fractures should also cut back on coffee.

For other adults, moderate caffeine intake equates to 400mg or less per day - or three to four cups of coffee - but that isn't the only drink (or food) to bear in mind.
How much caffeine in my drink?
• one mug of filter coffee: 140mg
• one mug of instant coffee: 100mg
• one mug of tea: 75mg
• one can of cola: 40mg
• one 250ml can of energy drink: up to 80mg
• bar of plain chocolate: less than 25mg
• bar of milk chocolate: less than 10mg

The researchers say coffee drinkers should stick to "healthy coffees" - which avoid extra sugar, milk or cream, or a fatty snack on the side. And they are calling for rigorous clinical trials on coffee intake to find out more about the potential benefits to health. At present, the researchers said pinning down exactly how coffee might have a positive impact on health was "difficult" but it could be down to the effects of anti-oxidants and anti-fibrotics, which prevent or slow damage to cells in the body.

Commenting on the BMJ review, Eliseo Guallar, from the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said there was still uncertainty about the effects of higher levels of coffee intake. But he added: "Moderate coffee consumption seems remarkably safe, and it can be incorporated as part of a healthy diet by most of the adult population."

Tom Sanders, professor emeritus of nutrition and dietetics at King's College London, said coffee drinkers may be healthier people to start with - and that could skew the findings.

"Coffee is known to cause headaches in some people and it also increases the urge to go to the toilet - some people chose not to drink coffee for these reasons. Patients with abnormal heart rhythms are often advised to drink de-caffeinated coffee. Caffeine also acutely increases blood pressure, albeit transiently”. "

Green Gecko Farm – Roasting

You have to admire the beauty of this San Franciscan Roaster that we came across in Virginia City, Nevada. Where a mining community was founded on the Bonanza ores of the Comstock Lode.

The coffee tradition is just as strong today as it was in the Wild West. We at Green Gecko Coffee pride ourselves that our roast profile provides a bonanza of unique natural flavors that is fully expressed and enhanced with our roast. You won’t taste the “roast” or that “burnt cowboy coffee” taste typical of most coffees, but the “terroir” of the coffee that has come from the land, Kona ore. We typically do a medium to a medium-dark roast (before or at the “second crack” in technical coffee roasting terms) and in small 6 pound batches.

With Green Gecko’s roast, you can savor a comstock bonanza of natural flavors, with tints of cinnamon, chocolate, and tropical fruit in every cup of Green Gecko’s Hawaiian Medium roast 100% Kona Coffee with its smooth, delicate, and full-bodied taste.

Drink Coffee, Live Longer
As many as four cups a day could provide a health boost by Austin O'Connor, AARP, July 11, 2017

“A pair of new studies show drinking more coffee offers life-extending benefits.
Good news (in a venti cup!) for those who love coffee: Two new studies show that drinking more java could help you live a longer life.
The health effects of drinking coffee have been a point of debate over the years, with some studies showing negative effects and others positive. These just-released studies should calm the jitters for those who rely on their daily jolt — or jolts — of caffeine to get through the day. The first study, conducted by researchers from the International Agency for Research on Cancer and the Imperial College London, surveyed more than 520,000 people in 10 European countries, making it the largest study on the correlation between coffee and mortality ever conducted in a European population. Its finding: Drinking more coffee significantly reduces the risk of death.
A second, separate study funded by the National Cancer Institute included a diverse set of subjects, surveying more than 185,000 adults from a range of ethnicities, including African Americans, Native Americans, Hawaiians, Japanese Americans, Latinos and whites. It found that the mortality boost provided by coffee extended across all races included.
Both studies were published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine. The European study found that drinking coffee lowered people's risk of liver, digestive and circulatory disease, and also lessened the rate of su***de in men and cancer in women. The survey also found that the more coffee you drink, the bigger the health boost. Subjects who drank three cups had a lower risk of all-cause death than those who did not drink coffee.
By focusing on various European countries, where coffee is prepared in many different ways, the study aimed to prove that positive health effects of coffee endure, regardless of preparation and serving style.
"The fact that we saw the same relationships in different countries is kind of the implication that it's something about coffee, rather than something about the way that coffee is prepared or the way it's drunk," said Marc Gunter, a principal investigator with the international research agency.
The second study echoed those findings, revealing that those who drank two to four cups a day had an 18 percent lower risk of death than those who did not drink coffee.
"Given these very diverse populations, all these people have different lifestyles. They have very different dietary habits and different susceptibilities — and we still find similar patterns," said study leader Veronica Wendy Setiawan, associate professor of preventative medicine at USC's Keck School of Medicine.
Not to drop a cloud in your coffee, but doctors caution that people should still practice moderation when it comes to their daily indulgence, and nutritionists warn that adding flavorings such as heavy cream and sugar can increase your caloric intake and nullify many of the health benefits of black coffee.”

Green Gecko Farm – Coffee Pruning and Vertical Selection.

We have completed the coffee pruning here at Green Gecko Coffee. Piles of 3 year old “canes” as we call coffee branches are stacked up, dying and waiting to be chipped, so they can become mulch which we then spread back into the coffee fields.

After we have completed our final pick and stripped the trees of any old coffee beans or “raisins”, we prune. We prune, cut off about 1/3 of the old canes and then select the best new branch buds, removing the others, which is called “vertical selection”.

Pending on the coffee tree we sometimes have to remove all or most of the branches and just leave the main trunk of the tree, which is called “stumping”. We also replant and fill in areas were coffee trees have died or just need to be replaced with a new tree.
Through this coffee farming practice we maintain the vibrancy of our coffee tree stock that will produce that perfect cup of 100% Kona Coffee that Green Gecko Coffee is known for.
