On Workers Memorial Day, America’s unions mourn the workers who have lost their lives or been injured or made ill on the job. Every worker should be able to go home after their shift safe and healthy, and we’ll keep fighting like hell to make that a reality for every worker.

The AFL-CIO wrapped up its Legislative Fly-in two weeks ago, and now the legislature is on the final stretch towards adjournment in May. The key issues put forward by legislators who are also members of unions are now on the front burner including work this week in the Senate Finance on the capital budget and HB 78 Defined Benefit Pensions for Public Employees. The House will take up the Operating Budget on the floor soon. Both bodies hope to address increase funding for public education and monitor proposals for nursing compacts. Pictured below are Senator Jesse Bjorkman, Reps. Maxine Dibert, Andy Josephson, Rebecca Himschoot, Zach Fields, Sara Hannan, and Ted Eischeid. Not pictured: Senator Bill Wielechowski.

Union members and concerned citizens turned out to support HB 78, a modest Defined Benefit Pension for public employees. Senators Bert Stedman, Jesse Kiehl, and Kelly Merrick listened intently to the public testimony including that of Jesse Sloan with APEA/AFT. The bill faces headwinds in the Senate Finance Committee, but Senator Kiehl has done his homework and is asking the right questions. There's still time to contact your senator and let the know you support pensions for public employees.

We are delighted to announce that the Juneau CLC’s 5th annual Thanksgiving Food Drive was a resounding success, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our community!

We successfully collected and donated over 3,300 pounds of food and supplies, in addition to $600 in monetary donations. All of this will benefit our community through three outstanding organizations: the Southeast Alaska Food Bank, Juneau Animal Rescue, and the Glory Hall/ Salvation Army/ LoveINC/St. Vincent Thanksgiving Basket program.

We extend our sincerest gratitude to Super Bear for providing their parking lot and to our dedicated volunteers who have shown up year after year.

We are deeply thankful for our community's remarkable generosity.
Thank you!

Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving, Juneau!
