Good news alert!

ASMI celebrated the welcome news yesterday about the creation of the Office of Seafood in the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). ASMI thanks U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Rollins, U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary Lutnick, Alaska’s Senator Dan Sullivan and Senator Lisa Murkowski, Alaska Rep. Nick Begich, and countless others for their tireless work in making a long-held effort a reality.

Jeremy Woodrow, executive director of the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute, said of the creation of the Office of Seafood: “Just like our country's farmers, America's fishermen feed the world. Establishing this office will provide greater access to USDA programs and alignment with NOAA to ensure that our fishermen and seafood industry continue to thrive well into the future.”

Today marks a new era of seafood policy with USDA's newly announced Office of Seafood. Through this new office, American fishermen will be recognized by USDA as a key part of the American food supply.

This action supports President Trump’s EO of Restoring American Seafood Competitiveness and plays an important role in coordinating with the U.S. Department of Commerce in the development of the America First Seafood Strategy.

UPDATE: ASMI's Technical Director, John Burrows, will be speaking on a panel Seafood Expo North America in Boston, MA today.

Session Title: An A La Carte Menu for Publicly Sponsored Seafood Marketing

Description: This session will evaluate different state programs that provide seafood marketing, understand what works best for each state, and explore challenges and opportunities for future programs. Learn tips and tricks on how to work with state entities and expand opportunities for seafood marketing within your state.
This session will focus on institutionalized seafood marketing and how to make it work as a community. We will evaluate the models used by various states and showcase best practices that have worked for each. Each state will provide insight on how to get programs funded, evaluate funding risks and opportunities with the changing federal landscape, and any return on investment evaluation that states have. We will also explore opportunities for future collaborations among states and what regional marketing could look like.
Further, this session will provide an opportunity for industry and marketing firms to find ways to bridge the gap between publicly sponsored marketing and private.
