Parents, families, staff, and community supporters, please use the link to add your voice and tell Congress that our organization, like many other Boys & Girls Clubs, relies on 21st Century Community Learning Center funding to serve the youth in our communities. Our program is FREE because of this grant, and it is imperative that we continue to receive this funding to keep our doors open and care for our kids. Please use the link below to add your voice today, and read our letter to better learn how this grant impacts our organization. It takes 30 seconds, but it makes a world of difference!

In recognition of Black History Month the Museum will be showcasing historic African-Americans from the Joplin areas and their contributions to our local history.

Pictured here is the Joplin Advance was first published on Friday, May 10, 1985, by William L. Yancey, a young black man who worked as a lawyer. The paper mainly gave Associated Press wire reports, but also informed African-American Joplinites on political opinions and advice on what businesses were friendly to them. Unfortunately, since only one issue of the Joplin Advance has been saved, we don’t know when the paper ceased publishing. We do know, however, that African-American run papers in Southwest Missouri found it particularly hard to survive and that the Advance likely did not last long.
