Let’s talk about the phrase “antibiotic-free.”

Because this label can create a misleading impression for consumers.

If you buy meat, milk or eggs at the grocery store, you are not buying food with illegal antibiotic residues simply because the animal may have been treated with antibiotics.

When antibiotics are used in livestock, required withdrawal periods must be followed before an animal or its products can enter the food supply. Those periods are designed to ensure residues are below established legal tolerances, and USDA testing helps verify compliance.

That’s very different from saying the animal never received antibiotics.

And that may be what a consumer is actually looking for when they see a label such as “No Antibiotics Ever” or “Raised Without Antibiotics.”

That’s a legitimate production choice.

But it should NOT be interpreted as:
“This meat has antibiotics in it, but this package doesn’t.”

That’s NOT how the U.S. food safety system works.

And here’s the part that often gets lost: Antibiotics are important tools in livestock medicine.

Animals get sick. Bacterial infections happen. When an animal needs treatment, responsible animal care can mean using an antibiotic.

So if you want meat from an animal that never received antibiotics, look for a label making that specific claim.

But don’t let the words “antibiotic-free” convince you that conventional meat is full of antibiotics.

It isn’t.

Your grocery store meat is subject to a food safety system designed to keep illegal drug residues out of the food supply.

Know what the label actually means. 🥩🇺🇸
