A little piece of Rome now lives in downtown Ironton. 🎨
It's finished! If you've walked past us on 2nd Street lately, you've seen it coming together, and now it's complete. Artist Gato Leyva has turned the side of our building into a sweeping tribute to Italy and to the story of where it all began. 🇮🇹
At the center of it all is a scene that goes back nearly three thousand years. As the old legend tells it, twin brothers Romulus and Remus were set adrift on the river Tiber and raised by a she-wolf who found them along the banks. 🐺 Those brothers would go on to found the city of Rome itself. It's a story of humble beginnings, of being cared for, and of building something meant to last for the ages.
Look closer and you'll find the rest of Italy woven in around them. The arches of the Colosseum, the great dome of St. Peter's, a boat drifting across the water, and the quiet countryside where so many families first made their living from the land. 🎨
And that towering figure you spot among them? That's the Eiffel Tower, and it belongs here more than you might think. For nearly seventy years, Paris and Rome have shared a rare and exclusive friendship, the only two capitals in the world to call each other sister cities. Their motto says it all: "Only Paris is worthy of Rome, only Rome is worthy of Paris." To honor that bond, Paris even placed its own statue of the she-wolf with Romulus and Remus at its heart, the very same image watching over our patio today. Two great cities, one timeless story. ❤️
There's something fitting about all of it living here over our patio. Melini has always been about bringing a little bit of that old world warmth to our corner of Ironton, with good food, familiar faces, and a place to gather and stay a while. Now there's a wall to match. 🍝
We're deeply grateful to Gato Leyva for the care and craft he poured into this piece. It's already becoming a part of the neighborhood.
So next time you're downtown, come pull up a chair on the patio, look up, and take it all in. Some stories are worth telling for thousands of years, and this one's right around the corner. 🇮🇹🇫🇷
