TMR BBQ Honors Union County Deputy Brandon Wicker as Hometown Hero for Dedication to Service and Cancer Awareness
Union County, NC – August 12, 2025 – TMR BBQ is proud to recognize Brandon Wicker, a dedicated deputy with the Union County Sheriff’s Office (UCSO), as a Hometown Hero for his 21 years of unwavering service to the community and his inspiring commitment to raising awareness for those battling cancer.
A lifelong resident of Union County, Brandon Wicker has followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, father, and brother, all of whom have served in law enforcement. For Brandon, protecting and serving is more than a career—it's a family legacy and a deeply personal calling.
In December 2019, Brandon's path took a profound turn when he connected with Waylon Baucom, a young boy facing inoperable brain cancer, through the Hometown Heroes program. Their instant bond motivated Brandon to start running at least one mile every day in honor of Waylon and others fighting cancer. Over the past four years, Brandon has upheld this daily running streak, regardless of weather or challenges. Although Waylon tragically passed away approximately three years ago, his memory continues to inspire Brandon's efforts.
As Brandon's friend Tim McBride poignantly stated, “People fighting cancer don’t get to take a day off, so neither will I.” True to these words, Brandon dedicates each step to Waylon and all those affected by cancer, turning personal loss into a powerful message of resilience and support.
TMR BBQ celebrates Brandon Wicker for his exceptional service with UCSO, his profound impact on the Union County community, and his ongoing mission to honor cancer fighters through his daily runs. His story exemplifies the spirit of a true Hometown Hero—selfless, determined, and deeply committed to making a difference.
