As we honor this important day, we celebrate the strength, resilience, and contributions of Black Americans and reaffirm our dedication to creating pathways of opportunity for everyone we serve.

This week, 60 of our CSL staff and leadership came together for three days of training, goal setting, and even hard conversations. Our team is passionate, kind, strong and ready. We are a trauma informed community development organization. We seek transformation above transaction. We love our community!

When elected officials and City of Independence, MO, Government staff come together with neighbors over a meal, real conversation can be had.

Our City asked for our neighbors' input about housing and other concerns last November. This week the City, led by Councilman John Perkins, showed accountability and reported back. Next steps are already in place.

We are better, stronger when together!

Have you heard of the WestiNd Connection in our community? They partner with our q***r community to ensure everyone has safety. They shared their beautiful garden with us, told us about their Inclusion Center and their many other ways of building others up!

– Community Services League success stories

Edith Tovar has been a part of the Family Stability Program since August of last year, and her journey is a powerful reflection of resilience and determination.

Despite life’s ups and downs, Edith has remained committed to creating stability for her family. As a stay-at-home mom, she has thoughtfully explored ways to contribute financially while still being present for her baby. On weekends, Edith prepares and sells food—an idea she developed through conversations with her coach about balancing income and family needs.

Edith continues to take full advantage of opportunities to grow and stay connected. She regularly participates in CSL’s Hispanic Food Box program and recently completed a Computer Class at BlendWell Communidad, building new skills for her future.

In March Edith and her family attended the Easter Egg Hunt event hosted at BlendWell, where her children also received support from The Love Fund. Each of her three children was given funds to shop for clothes and shoes at Walmart—bringing both relief and joy to the family.

Edith’s story is one of persistence, creativity, and love for her children. We are proud to walk alongside her as she continues building a strong and stable future.

Fairmount Elementary has been a neighborhood school for 1000s of children. Today, we are excited that the remodeling starts to make it brand new and still maintain history.

You could choose to see mess or even chaos. We are so excited about how walkable and beautiful our neighborhood is becoming. Neighbors have long said they want walkability. Thank you to City of Independence, MO, Government for making their civic engagement matter!
