Gotiti sits within Ethiopia’s legendary Yirgacheffe Region, in Gedeb Woreda. Farmers here—868 of them—grow coffee on tiny plots, often intercropped with shade trees that naturally enrich the soil. They carry their cherry by mule or on foot to the local washing station, where it’s carefully washed, fermented, and dried. The result is exactly what you’d expect from this land: elegant, floral, and distinct.

As a veteran producer, Angel’s decision to add fruit to his washed Gesha process was not made lightly. Heirloom varieties like Gesha are exciting, but challenging for smallholders to manage and profit from. And although local prices for these varieties are higher, they must achieve a cup score of 86 to qualify for that price. Angel’s extensive experience as a coffee grower helps him navigate the challenges many in San Agustin face, where investing in coffee often lacks guaranteed returns. With the simple step of adding in fresh fruit to his washed process, he’s been able to boost the sweetness and complexity without sacrificing the inherent Gesha character. What results is a delicate, nuanced cup that reveals a unique tropical sweetness as the cup cools, showing that fruit inclusions don’t have to overtake the profile and redefine coffee’s inherent character.
