Para Abraham Quintanilla !!!!!!!
First of all I want to emphasize how much I loved Selena as a friend and have the upmost respect and pride for her amazing career, as well as the Quintanilla family which I still regard as friends.
As one of the “Payasos” mentioned in his rant I would like to make clear that the only reason we comment about Selena is because we are always asked questions by media , since it’s a well known fact in our industry of our association with Selena y Los Dinos in the late 80’s and early 90’s.
We met Selena in 1984 when I think Selena was about 13 in Angleton Texas at Bobby Joes Club. We were promoting our new single “Mi Loca Pasion” and Oscar would select fans from the audience to come up on stage and sing the song and a little girl was waving her hand to pick her and it was Selena. After the show Mr Quintanilla along with the family came out to our bus and he introduced himself and the family. He became friends with our manager at the time Henry Gonzales (Oscars brother) . We started taking Selena y Los Dinos on tour in 1986. She toured all over Texas with us as a special guest and performed her last show with us in 1991 at The Summit in Houston along with our other special guests that night Roberto Pulido and Emililo Navaira. We have never said we gave her her start, but we have stated facts about our friendships. We all have people that help us in our beginnings , as we always give credit to Little Joe Y La Familia for helping us in our start. There is nothing demeaning in saying Selena opened shows for us. In 1989 Selena y Los Dinos were an opening act in a big festival in Rosenberg Texas which La Mafia was headlining. The promoter had little solid Gold microphone pendants made for the lead singers one for Oscar and 2 of the other co-headliners. Oscar felt sorry for Selena because one wasn’t given to her and he gave her his Gold microphone , which was later returned to Oscar at the funeral because the family knew how much she loved that gift. There are actually a few publicity photos where she is wearing that Gold microphone. As you can already imagine there are many many many stories of our friendship.
The last time I saw Selena was in 1994 when she came along with her Mom to Houston to see our new Recording Studios. I took them to eat at one her favorite Cajun restaurants in town and promised to go to Corpus to see her new Boutique which I sadly didn’t get to visit til the day of her funeral.
I will finish by saying the only reason I responded to his silly post is because my band La Mafia has worked too hard be disrespected in this way by him claiming we are “jealous and following the leader” , we have been blessed with a 41 year career and God willing many more. We love music and we love our fans and will try to continue creating great memories for them. Selena has become a World Icon and I will always treasure my friendship with her with pride and joy.

En primer lugar, quiero enfatizar cuánto amaba a Selena como amiga y le tengo el mayor respeto y orgullo por su increíble carrera, así como por la familia Quintanilla, a la que todavía considero amigos.
Como mencionó uno de los “Payasos” en su perorata, me gustaría dejar claro que la única razón por la que comentamos sobre Selena es porque los medios siempre nos hacen preguntas, ya que es un hecho bien conocido en nuestra industria de nuestra asociación con Selena y Los Dinos a finales de los 80 y principios de los 90.
Conocimos a Selena en 1984 cuando creo que Selena tenía unos 13 años en Angleton Texas en el Bobby Joes Club. Estábamos promocionando nuestro nuevo sencillo “Mi Loca Pasion” y Oscar seleccionaba a los fans de la audiencia para subir al escenario y cantar la canción y una niña pequeña agitaba la mano para elegirla y era Selena. Después del espectáculo, el Sr. Quintanilla junto con la familia salieron a nuestro autobús y se presentó a sí mismo y a la familia. Se hizo amigo de nuestro manager en ese momento Henry Gonzales (hermano de los Oscar). Comenzamos a llevar a Selena y Los Dinos de gira en 1986. Ella viajó por todo Texas con nosotros como invitada especial y realizó su último show con nosotros en 1991 en The Summit en Houston junto con nuestros otros invitados especiales esa noche Roberto Pulido y Emililo Navaira . Nunca dijimos que le dimos el comienzo, pero hemos declarado hechos sobre nuestras amistades. Todos tenemos personas que nos ayudan en nuestros inicios, ya que siempre le damos crédito a Little Joe Y La Familia por ayudarnos en nuestros inicios. No hay nada degradante en decir que Selena abrió shows para nosotros. En 1989 Selena y Los Dinos fueron parte de un gran festival en Rosenberg Texas que encabezaba La Mafia. El promotor tenía pequeños colgantes de micrófono de oro macizo hechos para los cantantes principales, uno para Oscar y 2 de los otros grupos co-cabezas de cartel. Oscar sintió pena por Selena porque no se le dio uno y él le dio su micrófono de oro, que luego le fue devuelto a Oscar en el funeral porque la familia sabía cuánto amaba ese regalo. De hecho, hay algunas fotos publicitarias en las que lleva ese micrófono de oro. Como ya puedes imaginar, hay muchas muchas historias de nuestra amistad.
La última vez que vi a Selena fue en 1994 cuando vino con su mamá a Houston para ver nuestros nuevos estudios de grabación. Las llevé a comer a uno de sus restaurantes cajún favoritos de Selena en la ciudad y prometí ir a Corpus para ver su nueva boutique, que lamentablemente no pude visitar hasta el día de su funeral.
Terminaré diciendo que la única razón por la que respondí a su tonta publicación es porque mi banda La Mafia ha trabajado demasiado para ser irrespetado de esta manera por él diciendo que estamos “celosos y siguiendo al líder”, hemos sido bendecidos con 41 año de carrera y si Dios quiere muchos más. Amamos la música y amamos a nuestros fans y trataremos de seguir creando grandes recuerdos para ellos. Selena se ha convertido en un ícono mundial y siempre atesoraré mi amistad con ella con orgullo y alegría.
