Big Poppa’s Pizza Mascot Devoured By Hungry Crowd In Strongest Brand Engagement To Date
HOLLY — A promotional appearance by Big Poppa’s Pizzeria ended in tragedy Monday when the restaurant’s pizza-slice mascot was overwhelmed and devoured by a crowd of hungry pedestrians, an incident management later described as the company’s strongest brand engagement to date.
The incident occurred shortly after noon as the mascot waved to motorists outside the restaurant, occasionally pointing toward itself and giving two enthusiastic thumbs-up to passing drivers. Witnesses said several people initially stopped to take photographs before the gathering became noticeably less recreational after one person reportedly asked whether the slice was stuffed crust.
Within minutes, the mascot disappeared beneath a crowd of approximately two dozen people. Employees recovered a red Big Poppa’s hat, one white glove and several pizza crusts from the sidewalk. Management said the promotion nevertheless exceeded expectations, producing a substantial increase in lunchtime traffic and the complete loss of one promotional asset.
Big Poppa’s temporarily suspended mascot appearances while reviewing whether the costume had been too appetizing for public deployment. Preliminary findings identified several contributing factors, including realistic pepperoni, an unusually cheerful facial expression, lunch-hour scheduling and the mascot’s repeated practice of pointing directly at its own torso while encouraging residents to think about pizza.
Under revised safety procedures, future mascot employees will be instructed to maintain at least 25 feet of separation from visibly hungry pedestrians and immediately retreat indoors if a crowd begins licking its lips, requesting ranch or discussing how many slices everyone wants. The restaurant is also considering adding a large NOT ACTUAL PIZZA notice to the costume.
Sales reportedly increased sharply throughout the afternoon, however, and Big Poppa’s confirmed the mascot program will resume Friday. Management said additional security will be provided and a redesigned costume is being considered depicting something less edible.
Management is reportedly considering a pizza box.
