“How hard could it be? Let’s do it.”

Sometimes that’s the beginning of a business. Sometimes it’s the beginning of a room makeover you’ve been putting off.

Grace Start, daughter of Jean Stoffer of Stoffer Home Design, is talking about business here. But the idea applies to decorating and so much else in life: you don’t have to have every step figured out before you take the first one.

Try a paint sample. Explore an idea. Take one step, see what you learn, and build from there.

What have you been waiting to try?

Ever wonder why some old homes feel so special?

Designer Jean Stoffer says it’s the guardrails. The things you can’t change in an old house (the history, the zoning, the quirks built into the bones) are exactly what can turn a project from pretty into exceptional. “That’s life anyway,” she says. “There’s always guardrails.”

Why do English kitchens feel so different?

Designer Jean Stoffer noticed it years ago in British magazines: their kitchens felt like gathering spaces, with furniture, warmth, and beauty, while ours were mostly cabinets on a wall. So she set out to figure out exactly what made the difference.

Bathroom colors don’t just affect the room.

They affect **you** in the mirror.

Soft warm whites, peachy neutrals, muted sage, soft blush, powder blue, dusty lavender, and warm clay tones can all reflect a gentler, more flattering light back onto your face.

And in a bathroom, that matters.

Small space.
Bright lights.
Mirror.
Wall color bouncing everywhere.

The right color can feel like good morning light. The wrong one can make you look tired, pale, flushed, or washed out.

So before you pick your next bathroom color, ask two questions:

Does it look good in the room?
And does it look good on me?

Your bathroom color might be making you look tired, flushed, or washed out.

Some colors don’t just change the room — they change your face in the mirror.

The biggest offenders?
Yellow-greens. Reds. Grays.

A color can look amazing on the wall and still be terrible on you. That’s the tricky part of bathroom paint: it has to look good in the space and look good on your skin.

If your bathroom has ever made you look a little “off,” your wall color might be part of the problem.

Which one surprises you most?

The bathroom color can be perfect for the room… and still be wrong for you.

That deep charcoal?
That moody green?
That trendy blue everyone loves?

They might look amazing with the tile, the vanity, the fixtures, and the towels.

But in a bathroom, the wall color has another job: it has to look good on you, too.

Because when you’re standing close to the walls, under bright lights, staring into a mirror, that color can bounce right back onto your face.

And suddenly you look tired. Washed out. Flushed. Dull. A little “off.”

The room might look like a magazine… but you’re the one who has to see yourself in it every morning.

So before you pick a bathroom color, ask two questions:

Does it look good in the room?
And does it make me look good in the mirror?

Your bathroom mirror might not be telling the whole truth.

Every morning, the color on your bathroom walls can bounce back onto your face — and subtly change what you see in the mirror.

It’s called **color casting**.

Photographers watch for it. Makeup artists watch for it. And it can happen in your bathroom because you’ve got the perfect setup:

Small space.
Bright lights.
A mirror.
Wall color surrounding you.

That color can make you look tired, washed out, flushed, dull, or just… off.

So before your next paint job — or before you blame the lighting, the mirror, or your skincare routine — take a look at your wall color.

Have you ever noticed this in your bathroom?

So what does Art Deco actually look like?

Think sharp lines, bold geometry, sunbursts, chevrons, stepped forms, polished surfaces, dramatic lighting, and symmetry everywhere.

It showed up in skyscrapers and movie palaces, but also in mirrors, radios, furniture, tile, clocks, and everyday objects.

Art Deco took ornament and gave it discipline. It turned beauty into something sleek, modern, and unmistakably bold.
