How do we get to great coffee- Double Cup!
Understanding Coffee Reviews in the Specialty Coffee World
In the specialty coffee world, coffee reviews serve as more than just opinions—they are educated evaluations that reflect the quality, origin, flavor profile, and processing of the coffee bean. These reviews are most credible when conducted by licensed Q-graders, who are certified professionals trained to evaluate coffee using an internationally recognized scoring system. Their reviews help roasters, cafés, and consumers alike understand what makes a coffee truly exceptional.
As a team member at Double Cup Coffee, understanding and being able to communicate these reviews to customers shows that you care about the craftsmanship behind every cup. You’re not just serving coffee; you’re guiding guests through a flavor journey and giving them insight into where the coffee comes from, how it’s been graded, and why it stands out.
The Q-Grading System: Measuring Quality
The Q-Grade scale, developed by the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI), scores coffee on a 100-point scale, similar to how fine wine is rated. A certified Q-Grader evaluates a coffee based on specific criteria such as:
• Fragrance/Aroma
• Flavor
• Aftertaste
• Acidity
• Body
• Balance
• Sweetness
• Clean Cup
• Uniformity
• Overall
Each category is scored out of 10, and the sum determines the coffee’s overall quality:
Score Range
Quality Classification:
90–100 Outstanding
85–89.99 Excellent (Specialty Grade)
80–84.99 Very Good (Specialty Grade)
70–79.99 Average/Commercial Grade
Below 70 Below Specialty Grade
To be classified as Specialty Coffee, a bean must score 80 points or above.

Why Bear Lake Coffee Earns High Scores
Bear Lake Coffee consistently receives high Q-grade scores because of several key factors:
1. Single-Origin Beans – Bear Lake sources beans from traceable farms known for sustainable and meticulous cultivation practices.
2. Processing Methods – They often use washed or natural processes that enhance clarity, body, and unique flavors.
3. Roasting Expertise – Bear Lake works with artisan roasters who preserve the integrity of the bean, aiming for balanced profiles rather than over-roasting.
4. Freshness – Beans are roasted in small batches and shipped quickly to preserve peak freshness.
5. Cup Quality – Common tasting notes include berry, chocolate, citrus, and floral, making their coffees vibrant and memorable.
