Nick's Ice House Named one of the 'South's Best Bars' by Southern Living magazine, Nick's Ice House has been a Hattie One had attended USM and raved about it. And he did.

Depending on who you ask and how many beers they've had at the time of their answer, Nick's Ice House opened its doors nearly 50 years ago – sometime during the mid 1970s. Owner Nick Kolinksy opened Nick's at decided to put down roots in the Hub City after several years playing football at the University of Southern Mississippi. Kolinksy, once described by award-winning sports columnist Rick Cleve

land as a "square-jawed, bull-strong lineman" was a Pennsylvania native and Army veteran who was originally a walk-on at Southern Miss. In a column published following Kolinsky's death in 2016, Cleveland said Kolinsky first learned about USM while in the Army and drinking beer with some other soldiers in a German beer hall. According to Cleveland, Nick decided right then he was going to go to college in the funny-named town of Hattiesburg. When he left Pennsylvania in 1960, he told his mother he was headed for Mississippi. Her reply: "Son, that's a river, isn't it?"

Nick was a member of USM's 1962 national championship team, served as co-captain, and was inducted into the university's alumni association Sports Hall of Fame in 1984. "Sometimes to be a successful football player, you have to be a little crazy," the induction note said. "Talent is important of course, but so is the ability to sort of detach you from everything else and totally throw yourself into the moment of the game. "Nick Kolinsky was that type of player. One who had the skills and the abilities to play the game at its highest levels, but who on occasion could let go and be a little crazy." Sort of like its namesake, Nick's Ice House is a no-frills dive bar. We only accept cash, but have an ATM on site for your convenience. For the most part, we only sell bottled beer and only the basics: Budweiser, Bud Light, Yuengling, Miller Lite, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Coors Lite, Miller High Life, Michelob Ultra, and Truly Hard Seltzers. We also try to have bottled water, and cans of Coca Cola, Diet Coke, and Sprite on hand. Southern Living magazine named Nick's one of the South's Best Bars in 2016 along with legendary watering holes like the Napoleon House in New Orleans, Pinewood Social in Nashville, the Salty Dog Saloon in Gainesville, and Gallettes in Tuscaloosa. Here's what those fancy writers at Southern Living had to say:

"There are no frills at this Mississippi dive bar, which means cheap beer from a bottle (no draughts—sorry, beer nerds) and barstools topped with … toilet seats. But locals swear what it lacks in polish it makes up for in character. Kick back here for a round of darts or a game of pool with friends in the most casual of atmospheres."

To all the supporters and believers of Nick’s Ice House. Unfortunately, the stars did not align. Nick’s Ice House will not build back. Nick is at peace, which makes it easier to put Nick’s at peace. We thank everyone who supported Nick’s for 50 years.

Thank you to everyone who supported the fundraiser that was organized by Nathan Rogers. Nathan knew that Nick’s did not have insurance and decided to put his energy to help Nick’s build back. While we had a great number of financial commitments to the fundraiser, the actual amount of donations received was significantly less.

Please know that we are extremely grateful for every penny donated to the cause and for every individual who contributed. We were able to use some of the funds to explore our options to build Nick’s back, but we quickly realized it was beyond reach. We will be purchasing a memorial plaque to place in front of the site in memory of 50 years of Nick’s Ice House. The remaining funds will be donated to Hub City Service Dogs in honor of all the supporters of the Nick’s build-back.

Thank you for all the time and donations contributed for the giveaways and auction items.
Thank you to all the vendors.
Thank you to Sidelines. Thank you to Shenanigans.
Thank you to The Mag.
Thank you to the Rack Room.
Thank you to Last Call Bar and Grill.
Thank you to all who participated with your kindness. Time. Donations. And money. Please feel free to contact us.

I can still be reached at Nick’s 601-544-5987. Rheanne Kolinsky Craft.

Nick’s Ice House, a Hattiesburg landmark, was destroyed by an electrical fire on July 21, 2021. The people of Hattiesburg have spoken, and they have been heard, they want Nick’s back. We are here to help make that happen along with several businesses and individuals in the Hattiesburg community. We bring you Sunday August 8th, 2021.
If you wish you ride the Pub Crawl busses that will be available free of charge, please meet at Last Call Bar & Grill @ 11:00 AM. Busses will depart @ 11:45 and head to the first location. Along the way for your listening pleasure are a mix of some of the Nick’s bands you know and love with some Salted South Music talent mixed in to show their support. Preforming will be bands such as: Candace Bush Band, Brandon Lowery & Josh Jones, Blackwater, Prophets of Purp, & Nick’s Icemen. To keep the party going several artist are going to be rocking the stages as well. Holly Rumbarger, JR Reynolds, Phillip Blackwell, Alcus Hudson, Josh Campbell, Rona Barrett, Hunter Riley, Galen Martin, Elise Thornton, Cody Harvey and more.
Lanyard’s will be available at each location for purchase ($20.00). Must have lanyard in order to be entered into drawings for the many door prizes and giveaways at each location. Once you reach the final destination and your lanyard has been marked by all 5 participating bars you will be entered into the 50/50 drawing from lanyard sales. 50% going to the person whose lanyard is drawn, 50% going to Nick’s to help them rebuild bigger and better than even before. Lanyard’s are not required for food and drink purchases or to participate in the silent auctions.
Come hungry and thirsty and ready for a good time. A variety of food will be available at each location, plenty of cold drinks, and ready to raise some money!!
